Choose the right size of aquarium that is the size which you are capable of maintaining time-wise and money-wise. If you are choosing a tank with a back ground, then do so, because once you buy a plain tank and have it filled with water, then painting the background cannot be done.

Also, buy the right kind of filter suiting your tank size to filter the water. You are also required to buy a heater to keep the water in the tank at warm temperature because certain species of fish like tropical ones are used to warm water conditions.

You will have to decide in advance as to the kind of substrate you wish to have at the bottom of the tank, whether it shall be coral or simple live sand. You will then have to buy a saltwater mix and a hydrometer, which are available at the place where you get your aquarium.

It would also not be a bad idea to go for spare filters and filter medium, like activated carbon. After this, comes the turn of saltwater kit. The kit tests the level of chemicals like ammonia and nitrate, salinity, carbon dioxide, PH levels, chlorine, iron, etc. Save money by buying a master kit.

Do not forget to buy rubber gloves, scrub brush and a fish net. Lastly, do acquire a quarantine tank which will act as recuperation tank for sick fish to save other fish from getting infected. With all these, you shall be the proud owner of a saltwater fish tank.
