Aquariums are fun to have and to admire in homes and office areas. But, they can be a challenge when it comes to cleaning and maintenance. Aquarium cleaning and maintenance aren’t traditionally very difficult tasks, but they must be done consistently and with great care. Fish are surely entrancing, but they are equally messy when it comes to their water.

Below are some aquarium change and maintenance tips which should make aquarium cleaning easier and more effective:

• When changing the tank’s water or cleaning the tank, tank owners should make sure all of the supplies and accessories, including filter(s), beams, underwater features and footing material (sand, dirt, beads, gravel) are thoroughly rinsed and cleaned. If dirt remains on them, the new water can become dirty or contaminated again very quickly.

• Tank owners should also clean inside an empty tank with soap and water as opposed to simply rinsing. The former removes all of the smudges, whereas the latter will not. The effects could be the same as in the previous tip. Cleaning halfway is a waste of time. However, the tank owner must be completely sure all soap residues are rinsed from the fish tank well. Many pet stores offer tank cleaner which will get a tank cleaned and not leave a residue of any kind.

• During extremely hot and cold temperature days, tank owners should adjust the internal temperature of the tank. If this is not done, water may become affected and so will the health of the fish.

In a nutshell, a fish’s environment is constantly being used, so it must constantly be as clean as possible. Good health for humans and for fish can never be anything less than priority.

Many supplies and accessories are marketed for your fish tank.

Some are for life preservation, others for cleanliness and purity and still others for aesthetics.

Among these, only a few are considered essentials, many only a few are those items absolutely necessary for proper function of the aquarium and maintaining the interior environment..

Below is a list of essential fish tank survival items, followed by a brief explanation as to why they are essential:

Filter: This regulates water temperature and maintains cleanliness and freshness of water, which is required for the health of marine life.

Pump: Some aquariums (especially the larger ones) offer room and accommodation for pumps for water purification.

Illuminated light: Illumination also serves to keep marine healthy and active, as long as it is not too bright. Also, the light is needed so observers can view the contents of the aquarium with difficulty.

Soil, Dirt: The bottom material should match the requirements of the marine. For example, whatever substance is necessary to facilitate the incubation of eggs.

Flora: Certain flora, such as algae, disperses certain nutrients into the water to enhance breathing conditions and sustenance for marine life.

Fish Food: This provides sustenance for fish. Other forms of food such as tiny worms are also available for acquisition.

Accessories: Certain features, such as large fossil-rocks, provide shade and privacy for certain species of fish. This should be provided as well.

If all these items are supplied for your fish tank, the environment will indeed be complete and livable for all forms of marine life.

After your tank is all set up and running smoothly, you are ready for your trip to the pet store for your fish purchases. Tropical fish for beginners can be difficult however and beginners should certainly do research before filling their tank by reading books or talking with pet store employees.

While it can be tempting to buy exotic and other more active fish to fill your tank, you should choose community fish first. These are the varieties that are not aggressive and will not bite you or eat other fish in the tank. While you may be excited about filling up your fish tank and watching them swim among the colorful aquarium components, you must first gain the experience you need not only to take care of fish but also to learn which species can live together comfortable and in harmony.

Buying community fish also allows you to learn how many fish can comfortably live in your tank. Schooling fish are a good option for the first time fish owner as well and just as they name implies they remain together in a “group”. These fish are fun to watch as they move so gracefully throughout the tank. Buy as many as you can fit in your tank and enjoy them as they remain in motion, swimming together.

Remember, reading a book about tropical fish for beginners or speaking to a fish expert about which fish are best for you is a great way to start a healthy tank.

There are a lot f challenges that can arise in the course of the freshwater aquarium maintenance. To begin with, you have to acquire an appropriate filtration system that will clean your aquarium and keep your species healthy and protected from infections and diseases provoked by the dirty aquarium water.

However, one of the key moments, concerning your aquarium is the installation of the lighting equipment. Most people tend to treat this process carelessly, thinking that the difference between different lighting systems lies only in the price and the manufacturer of this or that lamp.

It is partly true, but there is much more to it than just a price, because different lighting options are intended for different fish tank and it is not only about the size or about the shape, it is also about the type of the aquarium you are going to start up (freshwater or saltwater aquarium).

You shouldn’t also forget about such characteristics of lamps such as their color and power. Different species prefer different types of lighting, different environment, different PH levels of water and even different temperature. The mere change in these characteristics can lead to diseases and even death of your species. So, as you understand, if you are not a specialist in the sphere of aquariums, you need to have a good piece of advice on how to treat your fish and handle your aquarium in the whole.

One of the most popular and bought lamps for your freshwater aquariums are fluorescent bulbs. The first reason for this is that fluorescent lamps are available practically in any possible pet shop in the world. Be sure, that whatever shop you visit, the first lamp that will be offered to you by a shop assistant is the fluorescent lamp.

So, why is it so reliable and popular among customers? The most important reason of fluorescent lamp popularity is their low energy consumption that has been already proven many times. It means that the lamp gives a bright light and consumes much less power comparing to other types of lamps.

The second type of lamps are the metal halide lamps. The bad thing about them is the extremely high price, but as you deal with these lamps, you understand that they are really worth it. The thing is, metal halide lamps imitate the sun light and the effect of such lamp on your aquarium is equal to the effect of the sun on the Earth.

As you understand, such lighting is going to be a perfect substitution to a natural sunlight and will help you to create a habitat for your species, which will be similar to their natural one. It will help your fish to feel better as if they were in the real ocean or sea.

Comparing these two types, we can say only that it is up to you to choose, depending on your budget and needs.

Most people, having aquariums at home, are quite irresponsible about them. Of course, you don’t need much time and skill to go and buy a fish tank, all needed accessories and let the fish in. The most difficult part begins, when you compose an aquarium from all these parts and your fish get a new life and a new home.

If you have already had an aquarium or have it now, you have obviously gone through all stages of an aquarist, who is just at the beginning of his or her long way to an ideal aquarium. The first two problems most aquarists face on their way are greening and clouding of water.

The first problem can be easily solved by moving your fish tank to another place, which is not subjected to direct sunlight. The thing is, the greening of water is usually caused by the growing of algae on the walls of your fish tank and by the speedy growth of weeds. Firstly, remove algae from the walls of your fish tank with the help of a sponge or a special scraper you can buy in your local pet shop.

Then, take all weeds out of water and clean them carefully. Change a sponge in your filter (if you have a sponge filter of course) and let your fish back into aquarium. The second problem, clouding, can be much more serious than a greening. You shouldn’t panic if you see that the water in your aquarium is cloudy.

Worries never solve problems, so, the first step thing you have to undertake is to find out, why water has clouded. There are several steps, which must be done in order to make the water clear:

1. Remove the gravel out of your aquarium and check it. It happens that the particles of food and dirt accumulate in the bottom of a fish tank and the water suddenly gets cloudy. Wash the gravel thoroughly and boil it if possible. Place the gravel back to your fish tank.

2.	Remember, when you replaced your aquarium filter last. If much has already gone since then, replace it with a new one, as powerful as possible.

3.	Check the ammonia and nitrite levels with special measuring devices.

There are preventive measures you can take in order to stop clouding:

Never overfeed your species. The particles of uneaten food pollute the water

Don’t place your aquarium in a room, filled with sunlight the most part of the day

Change filters timely

Buy a catfish, eating the particles in the walls and in the bottom of your fish tank

Change water at least once a week

Use de-chlorinators if your water is disinfected by chlorine

Want to start up your own aquarium? Want it to be as much beautiful as your friend’s one? Well, then you have to understand what you are going to get and the main thing you are to know is the types of aquariums and peculiarities of their maintenance.

Moreover, there are thousands of breeds you can choose from and numerous factors influencing your possible choice – from their color to their size. Don’t forget about their behavior. If the fish is intolerable to other species (of the same gender or of another breed), you have to think twice before buying it, because careless choice can give you many troubles and you will either have all your species eaten or have problems with keeping.

Remember. That aquarium is not just a fish tank with your pets, but also an important part of your interior decor.

If you have friends, who are lucky owners of saltwater aquariums, you must know what a delight it is to watch exotic colored species warping around a large fish tank with a clear water, exotic plants and beautiful background. It is not only a sight, which charms you, but it also soothes your nerves greatly. Therapeutic effect of aquariums has been known since the ancient times and saltwater exotic aquariums are not an exception.

If you are also going to start your own saltwater aquarium, the first thing you have to think of is the right choice of species for your fish tank. There are no doubts that it is great to go to the local pet shop with your entire family and choose the breeds you all like, but there can be a very delicate situation, when your children, for example, want to have incompatible breeds of fish in one and the same fish tank.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of beautiful fish, which cannot live together. They can damage or even kill one another. It narrows your fish ‘wish list’ greatly, but still there are a lot of wonderful species available for you.

As the PH and hardness levels of water are going to be either not sufficient or too high for your fish in the beginning, you’d better choose species, which are not that sensitive to these factors. Probably, they will be not as beautiful as other exotic fish, but they are a great choice especially in the beginning. In the course of time, when all water characteristics will be normalized, you can buy and let new fish in your aquarium.

The most interesting example of fish you can get for your aquarium is a molly. There is a wide range of colors and you can buy mollies of gold, silver, dalmatin and black colors. These fish have very beautiful fins and scales. The tails are also very long and beautiful, so that you cannot tear yourself from your aquarium – so beautiful it will be. You can buy mollies irrespectively of their gender, but you can buy up to two female fish for one male fish, which is a distinguishing characteristic of this breed.

One of the most interesting facts about mollies is that they are great gluttons. It means that there will be great quantity of recrements and food particles in your fish tank, which are to be timely removed to preserve the water clean and clear. You may need a good filter to do this, which can appear to be quite expensive, but still you cannot do without it. However, this small and unplanned investment is worth it and you will enjoy the most beautiful aquarium ever!

And use your golden chance to find the best bargain on the market. We are living in the world where knowledge quickly enhances the quality of our life.

That is why if you are properly armed with the knowledge in your topic you can be sure that you will always find the solution to any bad situation. So, please make sure to visit this blog on a regular basis or - the least time consuming way of doing it - sign up to its RSS feed.

As well as any other hobby, aquariums require a great deal of attention and care. There are so many peculiarities and care requirements, typical of this or that breed of fish and that must be observed in order to have healthy fish. Most people start up aquariums, because they think that it is going to be the most suitable variant for occupied people, who have no time to care for cats and dogs.

It is the greatest delusion that can be imagined. You have to pay much more attention to your fish tank than you think. Moreover, there will be some unplanned investments into your fish tank, like additional filters, lighting equipment, new species, etc. The greatest difference between the maintenance of aquariums lies in their types.

There are two general types of aquariums – freshwater and saltwater aquariums. As you understand, there are a lot of factors to consider, when choosing the type of aquariums. Freshwater aquariums are very popular nowadays and this popularity is mostly predetermined by the simplicity in maintenance. When it comes to saltwater aquariums, we have to admit that they are much more difficult to be kept, because of specific conditions preferred by exotic species.

The first and the most important thing about the both types of aquariums is the acid-base level, also known as PH level of water. Fish are extremely sensitive to PH changes of water and can experience shock or even die because of these changes. Irrespectively of what type of aquarium you choose, you have to buy the PH measuring device in the first place.

Water hardness is one more factor that must be considered in definite cases. The thing is, there are several breeds of fish, which are intolerant of certain hardness rates. Anyway, there are ways to help you with the maintenance of the water on one and the same PH and hardness level. There are special PH buffers available in most of pet shops, so if you see that there are considerable changes of PH level, you can buy a buffer and normalize the situation.

The third important factor that can influence the health of your species is the temperature of water. It is necessary that you examine some literature of an aquarist and get the information on temperature preferences of fish.

Different breeds like different temperatures and if you don’t maintain the temperature average for all your species, or choose the fish that are not compatible, the problem will arise and you can lose the most beautiful species because of your carelessness. So, think twice before choosing the right type of aquarium for you, and if you are a business person and go on business trips often, you’d better choose a freshwater aquarium for your home.

To maintain your aquarium in a good state is not an easy thing to do and it requires a certain knowledge and experience. If you have already had an aquarium in the past, you probably know that fish are vulnerable pets and tend to be infected and diseased sometimes, as well as cats, dogs and canaries.

The main factors causing your fish’s illnesses are the abrupt temperature changes, PH level drop, dirtying of the water with weeds’ particles and high ammonia and nitrite levels. There are many more reasons, provoking illnesses, but things, mentioned above, happen much more often and that is why they are considered to be important for you to know about them. Fish are very sensitive to stresses, which is why it is strongly not recommended to subject them to different factors, which can harm them.

However, the infection of your fish can be explained not only by under-maintenance, so you should check the state of your water and filters before accusing yourself of a bad care. There are colonies of bacteria, living in the water of your aquarium. These bacteria are not harmful for healthy fish, but if bacteria detect that one of the fish is weak, here comes troubles. As you know, different infections strike people with a weak immune system. The same thing happens to your fish. As soon as bacteria find an appropriate victim, they infect it and the ill fish usually dies.

There are cases, when it takes several days for infected fish to die. It is a very dangerous period for your aquarium, because other healthy fish can also be infected and your aquarium will be devastated after a loss of species. Therefore, it is extremely important to check the state of your aquarium and fish every day. If you see a weak fish or changes of the color of water, it is high time for you to ‘sound the alarm’. Transfer the weak fish to another fish tank or a jar, change the water in your fish tank and wash filters thoroughly.

There are several more ways of how the infection gets into your aquarium. You can even put it there yourself, without knowing it. Suppose, you have just bought a couple of new species and are tempted to let them into your aquarium to see how other species will accept them. Stop! Never let the fish in before you are sure that they are healthy! You can do it by putting them into separate small fish tank and watching their behavior for about a weak. If there is nothing strange about newcomers and they look healthy – let them in with a clear conscience. Take care of your fish and they will obviously pay you back.

And use your golden chance to find the best bargain on the market. We live in the world where information makes life easier.

Due to this if you are properly armed with the information in your sphere of interest you can rest assured that you will in any case find the way out from any bad situation.

Fish tank setup usually is easy and flawless. However, sometimes after the fish tank has been running for a few days problems can occur. One of the most common fish tank setup problems is cloudy aquarium water.

Cloudy water is often caused by bacteria, algae blooms or high levels of organic carbon. Here are some common cloudy water problems and what to do about them.

White Cloudy Water

If the water in your tank is white and cloudy after your fish tank setup, you may just need to wait for the gravel or sand to settle. Be sure to rinse anything you put into the tank before using it, to avoid this type of cloudy water.

However, if the tank has settled and white cloudy water is still present it could be due to a bacterial bloom which often occurs if you add too many tropical fish at once. This problem often corrects itself after your biological filter establishes a sufficient amount of bacteria.

Green Cloudy Water

If your tank’s water is green, it’s likely because of an algae bloom. Although it’s not usually harmful, green water isn’t attractive to look at. Green water usually occurs because of the nutrients and light entering into the tank. You may be feeding your fish too much or overstocking the tank.

Also, if you’re not changing the water often enough, green water can occur. Placing a tank in direct sunlight can also cause the water to turn green. To rid the tank of green water, do 25 percent water changes daily and replace the filter. Also, feed the fish a little less and turn the tank light off for a few days.

Fish tank setup doesn’t always come problem-free. So, be sure to be prepared if your water looks less than crystal clear by knowing proper tank maintenance tips and stick to them.

If you are thinking about setting up a fish tank to enjoy either at home or at your office, you can expect to put forth a little more effort beyond simply filling a tank with water and tossing in some fish. There will be some special equipment required if you want to properly care for the fish for a long period of time. Most set-ups will need something called an aquarium chiller which primarily keeps the water in the tank at a consistent temperature. During the heat of the summer months, aquarium chillers are especially needed to control the water temperature and help keep the tank free from algae and disease. You will most definitely need one if you want to set up a saltwater tank that will contain cold water fish.

The system works basically like an air conditioner or refrigerator and utilizes the identical principles of gas expansion and contraction. A thermostat control unit can be set to the appropriate temperature and when the water temperature rises above the set temperature, the cooling unit turns on. When the refrigeration gas gets compressed, it becomes cooler and the cool gas is directed to a heat exchanger where it absorbs heat from the tank water, which has been pumped through the exchanger. Then, surplus heat gets carried by the gas back to the compressor and across an expansion valve. The valve causes a sudden pressure drop to occur resulting in the heat being transferred to the radiator, which releases the heat into the outside air by way of a fan. Finally, the cooled water is returned to the tank and the entire cycle repeats until the tank water is at the specified temperature.

There are various kinds of water cooling systems. Thermoelectric styles are quiet, energy-efficient, and should really only be used with smaller freshwater and saltwater tanks with a slow water flow. Don’t even try to use them on large tanks with a fast water flow. Drop-in types are available in a variety of sizes and horsepower. No plumbing is required so drop-ins are useful for tanks that have limited space. In-line models are used for larger systems that have in-line filtration because they cool water after it has already been filtered. In-line styles require plumbing and are available in several sizes, so they will work with several sizes of tanks and are used mostly with saltwater setups.

When choosing a cooling system, one should take into consideration the size of the tank, the additional equipment, and the temperature requirements of the fish. Marine tanks in particular usually require set ups, such as lighting and water pumps, which generate heat that raises the water temperature. Without a system to lower the water temperature, the water can warm up too much where it can no longer hold enough oxygen to sustain the fish. The cooling systems themselves produce a considerable amount of heat, so be sure to plan for sufficient space and adequate ventilation to avoid adding heat to the tank water.

Aquarium plants are a common sight in freshwater tanks. The bright green colors are beautiful and provide a special backdrop where the striking shadings of the fish are emphasized and can be seen at their best.

In addition to their aesthetic function, aquarium plants also help with the oxygenation of the water, making it a vital addition to the air pump. Fishes and other aquarium life forms may hide in or behind them according to how big they are.

Another important benefit of having aquarium plants is the temperature regulation inside the tank. Even though the temperature changes in a fish tank are very small, the plants do have the beneficial ability to shade fish from direct light.

They aren't just useful as hideout places for the fish in your tank, but they also serve to help protect their scales from the damaging effects of direct natural or artificial light. This protection is appropriate when light in the dome of the tank is too strong for the fish living in it.

The popularity of aquarium plants have led some to not keep fish at all and just create water gardens in their aquariums. This has the added benefit of not needing to worry about food and also such frequent water changes, although the tank still requires regular cleaning to remain largely algae free. It is important to remember that in this instance the overcrowding of a tank with plants may be its own undoing, and moderation is the key to beautiful plant survival.

Aquariums can be a fun and interesting hobby and make a lovely addition to home decoration but beginners should be aware of the needs of the animals when stocking an aquarium.

Fish, in general, are social creatures but they also display a range of aggressive behaviors that could cause them to injure each other if they are improperly housed. Fish tanks that are too small can make them feel crowded and cause stress and territorial disputes.

Other fish prefer to school in large numbers and being kept alone can make them sick. Aggressive fish such as African Cichlids are beautiful but can easily kill more gentle community fish. If you have questions about the compatibility of different fish species there are many books and online sources that offer advice on the subject of tropical fish.

Most experts recommend keeping fish at a ratio of one inch of grown fish per gallon of tank space as a general guideline. Be aware that gravel and fish tank decorations can detract from the space available for fish as well.

Observe your fish to see if they are displaying normal behavior or are overly stressed and try to solve any problems you might encounter in a responsible way. A healthy aquarium environment results in healthy well adjusted fish that will live longer than those that are mistreated.

Aquariums of healthy and beautiful fish are almost everywhere to be seen but creating a nursery for sick or injured fish is something that is worth doing. These refugiums requires raise some plants and copepods and that you can do in a separate area within your aquarium.

The injured fish can be brought back to life with the help of all these copepods and amphipods so that the inhabitants of your aquarium can be fed properly. In addition to these raising more oxygen releasing plants will also help a lot.

Nutrient releasing plants and algae can also be grown as they release oxygen as well as consume all harmful substances and gases released. This helps in creating a healthy and thriving atmosphere, which in turn helps the sick fish get well soon.

You can also make a thick sandbed, which will help the bacteria and other creatures to grow and this helps creating a lively environment for fish and this helps them heal up fast. If you have a built-in skimmer inside your refugium it will give a much cleaner and healthier setting inside the fish tank.

Creating such an environment will give the fish natural food and this makes it feel more comfortable and relaxed and this in turn keeps it happy and contented too. Every pet needs company and an environment that makes them feel at home and relaxed and if they are sick you can help them recover by providing them the same.

Excessive cleaning can get rid of the healthy bacteria required to break down the toxins and waste such as ammonia into harmless nitrates. Doing the water change incrementally helps prevent problems.

While changing the water weekly it is essential to keep in mind that only one third of the whole water should be removed. Otherwise the water chemistry might drastically get altered and cause harm to the fish.

It's also a wise idea to vacuum the gravel approximately once per week to get rid of food as well as other debris from the bed of the fish tank. It is required to regularly test the ammonia, nitrate and pH levels of the water. It is also a good idea to keep a canopy or a hood over the tank at all times.

Tropical fish care also involves avoiding fish to get stressed. Stress and health go head in hand, especially with your fish because if their stress level increases, their ability to heal declines. The main causes of stress in fish are unsuitable water, lack of physical space, wrong mixing of species, oxygen deficiency, poor nutrition, and sudden changes.

Making sure the tank is not over crowded can help to keep the fish tank clean. You should know that no type of soap or detergent should be used when cleaning your fish tank. The amount of water removed should be replaced with de-chlorinated water of the same temperature as the water in the tank.

In order to keep the gravel in the tank clean, you should make sure you vacuum it about once a week. It is necessitated to analyze the ammonia, nitrate and pH levels of water repeatedly. It is also a good idea to keep a canopy or a hood over the tank at all times.

One point to remember in caring for tropical fish is to avoid any activity that can over-stress them. Excessive stressing of temperamental tropical fish reduces their capacity for recovery. The main causes of stress in fish are unsuitable water, lack of physical space, wrong mixing of species, oxygen deficiency, poor nutrition, and sudden changes.

It is also important to place the aquarium in a suitable place to prevent any kind of temperature fluctuations. It is also an important part of fish care regime to maintain the water quality.

Excessive cleaning can get rid of the healthy bacteria required to break down the toxins and waste such as ammonia into harmless nitrates. Doing the water change incrementally helps prevent problems.

Remember that only one-third of the water from the full tank should be replaced; once in a week. If not, then the chemical composition of the tank's water might change too abruptly, which could hurt your pets.

It's also a wise idea to vacuum the gravel approximately once per week to get rid of food as well as other debris from the bed of the fish tank. It is necessitated to analyze the ammonia, nitrate and pH levels of water repeatedly. It is also a good idea to keep a canopy or a hood over the tank at all times.

Another very important aspect of fish care is not letting your fish get stressed. Stress and health go head in hand, especially with your fish because if their stress level increases, their ability to heal declines. Fish can be stressed by improper water, cramping, bad mixing of species, low oxygen, bad nutrition, and sudden change.

Making sure the tank is not over crowded can help to keep the fish tank clean. You should know that no type of soap or detergent should be used when cleaning your fish tank. The amount of water removed should be replaced with de-chlorinated water of the same temperature as the water in the tank.

It is also a good idea to vacuum the gravel about once a week to remove food and other debris from the bed of the aquarium. It is necessitated to analyze the ammonia, nitrate and pH levels of water repeatedly. Consider, too, always keeping some kind of suitable cover atop the aquarium.

One point to remember in caring for tropical fish is to avoid any activity that can over-stress them. Excessive stressing of temperamental tropical fish reduces their capacity for recovery. Fish can be stressed by improper water, cramping, bad mixing of species, low oxygen, bad nutrition, and sudden change.

It is also important to place the aquarium in a suitable place to prevent any kind of temperature fluctuations. Proper fish care requires the water to be of good quality.

The basic aquarium filtration systems include the chemical, biological, and mechanical filters. The variants of these filters include internal, external, and the under-gravel filtration systems.

The external filters are the best if you can afford around $150. The under-gravel is least desirable; however, you can Filters are categorized as chemical, biological, and mechanical. You can purchase external, internal, and under-gravel filtration systems to support your fish aquarium.

If you are just starting out in fish care and aquarium care, avoid the under-gravel filters since it will require excessive maintenance, as well as the filters do not produce quality power.

However, you can use under-gravel filters in conjunction with mechanical, biological, or chemical filters. It is recommended to learn the actions performed by each filtering system before joining under-gravel filters with another filtration system.

One of the most popular filters utilized is the internal filters. The internal filters include foam cartridge(s) and a diminutive box. The filters work to draw liquid from grills. The liquids are then filtered by the foam cartridge, which exits through the nozzles found at the top of the filters.

Beginners could benefit from using the internal filters, since indicators will alert you when to clean or replace the filters. Valves work to produce oxygen, which adds to the advantages of using internal filters.

The internal filters also have filtering pads, which remove chemicals while using polyester and/or carbon pads. The strong synthetic fabrics produce low moisture, which absorbs the chemicals. The filters are hard-wearing, which means you will not have to replace the filters as often.

Using Nano fish tank aquariums

When we think of aquariums, we think of setups that are relatively easy to maintain. However, a nano fish tank requires a bit more maintenance.

Should you start a nano reef aquarium?

A nano reef aquarium can be a smaller system or a larger one. In some cases, it's recommended that especially if you're a beginner, you start with a larger tank, such as one that's at least 24 gallons. Smaller systems can also go south quickly very fast, whereas a larger tank gives you a bit more leeway when it comes to maintenance. This may be advisable if you're just starting out.

Investment

In general, a nano reef is probably going to cost you a bit MORE than another type of system will, although your final investment will probably be less once you get going. Coral collecting is probably going to be a bit pricier for you, which may up the cost of the nano reef if this is something you get into.

Are they difficult to keep up?

Nano fish tank aquariums are not really difficult keep up once you know what you're doing. However, you should research thoroughly so that you know what you're getting into before you decide to start one. As long as you follow a regular maintenance schedule, you'll need between 5 and 10 minutes a day to keep to keep things functioning on most days; you also have to be careful about any additions you make to your aquarium, as this can upset the balance you've worked so hard to achieve.

Change your water frequently

Nitrates can build up very quickly in a small body of water, so you have to make sure you keep your water changes up.

What fish or other creatures can you put in your nano reef?

Some good hearty fish for beginners are the pajama cardinals, cardinals, clown gobies, royal grammas, fire fish, pseudochromis, most damsels and basslets. "Clean up" creatures include hermit crabs like red legs and left-handed, astrea snails and turbo snails. You should have a snail for every one to 2 gallons your tank holds, and one crap for every three to 5 gallons. Cleaner shrimp are also good because they will clean your fish of parasites and will help your other "clean up" creatures do their jobs, too.

What coral should I keep?

You can pretty much keep any type of coral, but some will need more light than other kinds. Be careful about coral that puts out sweeper tentacles, because it may affect other coral negatively. Don't overdo the coral, either, because the coral needs enough room to grow.

Sterilization

Using a UV sterilizer is recommended to keep "bad bacteria" down, or, you can buy an aquarium with a built in wet dry filter. The polycarbonate cover should be left in place over the lights so that UV transmission is properly done. A separate internal filter with a UV sterilizer is still recommended Cured live rock broken up into 1-inch fragments is also a good way to purify.

Finally, change water and check water regularly, including alkali reserve, if necessary. In a nano aquarium, water characteristics change quickly, so you have to keep on top of this.

Filtration is important

For a good marine aquarium, you need good filtration. Filtration turnover should be at least four times per tank per hour, with in tank circulation at eight times an hour, at least. Live rock also performs its own filtration.

Models

Some good models for nano fish tank aquariums include the TRUVU Micro Series NANO Model 6, Model 12, or Model 25 fish tank aquariums. These particular models have easy to remove filtration systems and room for protein skimmers, for easy maintenance.

Keeping fish is a popular hobby for a myriad of reasons, because fish are fun pets to keep and also exciting to learn about. There are many considerations that need to be made when it comes to setting upup your own fish keeping hobby, including selecting the tank aquarium, selecting the environment, choosing your fish and setting up the right accessories.

The initial step to setting up your aquarium is to decide what size aquarium you want to begin with. There a quite a few tank aquariums to choose from but even as a beginner, larger is usually better. So while you may be able to begin with a 10 gallon aquarium, the smallest that is recommended is closer to 25 or 30 gallons.

Where are you going to put your aquarium? Ensure that you have adequatespace on a surface, or that you are prepared to buy an appropriate stand. If placing your aquarium on another piece of furniture, keep in mind that a single gallon of water weighs 8 lbs.

Most tank aquariums will already come with a basic light and a hood that will work on a general purpose basis unless you plan to grow a lot of aquatic plants. If your hood and light are not already running on a timer, it would be advantageous to purchase one when you buy your aquarium. Depending on the species of fish you keep, your aquarium lights should only run for between 8 and 10 hours a day for the best results.

Your aquarium will also require a filter and a heater. There are a few choices to consider, and the choices that you make for these pieces of equipment should hinge on what type of environment you are looking to create. Each filter type, as an example, has pros and cons associated with it.

Bio-Wheel filters are popular for small and medium sized aquariums. What you should consider when buying an aquarium filter is the gallons per hour flow that the filter has. Your GPH rating should be 2 times the size of the aquarium that you are purchasing for the best results.

Heaters are important if you need to keep the water above 78 degrees, which is essential for tropical species of fish.

Another important consideration to make is the substrate that you will use for your aquarium. If you are looking to create a tropical fish aquarium, then sand or gravel is usually ideal. Some species of fish tend to favour one or the other, so make sure that the fish you are going to buy will work well with the substrate that you want to use.

The quality of light in your aquarium can affect the quality of your aquatic life. Your plants, corals or invertebrates require a correct spectrum and intensity of light in order to survive. When it comes to designing your aquarium you need to duplicate natural conditions as much as possible. This is now easier than ever before thanks to advancements that have been made in lighting technology.

For aquariums that have only fish, artificial plants and decorative wood and/or ceramics then you want a standard or power compact fluorescent system. The lighting system should be between one to two watts per gallon and should be able to stimulate a day-night cycle. Since a fish-only aquarium is a little more forgiving than other it allows you to choose a bulb spectrum that meets your individual preferences. However, don’t use standard hardware store bulbs since they will promote the growth of brown algae.

Then there are freshwater aquariums which typically contain fish, live plants and decorative wood and/or ceramics. For these aquariums you want a standard fluorescent, T-5 HO, VHO, Power Compact or Metal Halide/HQI light bulb. Most freshwater plants come from shallow rivers in Central and South America where they are exposed to the full-spectrum of light. Depending on the plant and the depth of your tank you will need between two and five watts per gallon.

Lastly there are marine reef aquariums which often have fish, invertebrates, corals and live rock. For these aquariums it is best to use T-5 HO, VHO, Power Compact or Metal Halide/HQI light bulbs. Light is a major part of nutrition for many corals and invertebrates, but each individual type requires a dramatic difference in light. Depending on your decorations you will need between four and eight watts per gallon.

After you finally get your saltwater tank all set up and full of beautiful fish, you’ll need to create a maintenance schedule for your tank. Saltwater tropical fish tank require similar maintenance to freshwater tanks. Use these tips to keep your tank clear and your fish healthy!

1. Be sure to change ¼ of your tank’s water each month. You can do this at one time or you can do smaller water changes throughout the month. Most tropical fish prefer you to make several smaller water changes throughout the month, to avoid PH shock. By changing your water in small increments you’ll help reduce nitrates and phosphates, which can harm your aquarium environment and your fish. Always be sure your replacement water is the same salinity, temperature and PH of the water you’re removing.

2. Once a month you should clean your filter and protein skimmers. These items are vital to keeping your water clean and the tank free of pollutants. If you don’t clean them monthly you’ll find yourself with a tank full of nitrates, phosphates, algae and unhealthy fish.

3. Every two months you should take the time to clean all pumps and power heads. This will help their flow levels stay clear and working properly. If you use dirty pumps heat can be radiated into the tank and be dangerous for the fish.

4. Be sure to never use harsh chemicals when cleaning your tank, decorations or any pumps and filters. Chemical residues may not completely rinse off during cleaning and you may find your fish dead after introducing the “cleaned” item back into the tank. You can purchase specific aquarium cleaning solutions or use water and an extremely small amount of simple vinegar.

When it comes to marine aquariums the most challenging and expensive is a reef aquarium. These aquariums are filled primarily with corals and other invertebrates, with actually very little to no fish. The corals and invertebrates are the main focus of the reef aquarium and require careful planning as well as regular maintenance.

The first step is to assemble your aquarium and cure the live rock. Add sand to the bottom of the tank and prepare your saltwater in a mixing container so that the specific gravity is exactly 1.025. Use a small bucket of the prepared saltwater to rinse the live rock and remove any organic debris and then arrange them in the tank as desired.

The protein skimmer and main filtration system should be run to have constant water movement, but the lights should be off at this time so there is no undesirable algae growth. For a period of four weeks you should change fifty percent of the water in order to cure your live rock.

Any organic matter should be siphoned out at this time. You also want to test for ammonia and nitrite to ensure they are at zero. The pH should also be tested and should ideally be between 8.1 and 8.4.

Next add the first inhabitants. First is a thirty gallon deluxe algae attack pack with snails and crabs. Follow the acclimation guidelines and be sure to turn the lights on and off every twelve hours for two weeks. At this time you can add your corals with a twenty-five percent water change and an acclimation period of two weeks.

On week eight you can add aqua-cultured corals and give them an acclimation period of two weeks. Lastly, on weeks ten and twelve you can introduce fish and invertebrates with a twenty-five percent water change and a two week acclimation.

Saltwater aquarium fish are some of the most interesting and captivating of the different kinds of fish that you can have in aquarium fish tanks. Saltwater fish come in such a vast array of colors and markings, shapes and sizes and truly make a dazzling display in fish aquariums.

They make stunning additions to fish aquariums and for many people, when they think about the most interesting and engaging home aquariums they have seen, they are remembering dazzling saltwater fish.

marine aquarium fish
This is because saltwater fish are often considered exotic and have a really great look that outshines the freshwater fish species. Such bright colors, unique markings and unusual shapes help to evoke thoughts of being on a tropical island or a sun-drenched getaway.

The reason saltwater aquarium fish have a tendency to be more intensely colored and varied, is because they come from the wide open oceans. This environment gives them more space and ability to evolve. Also, the deeper waters that many of them are found in means the damaging rays of the sun have much less effect upon them.

This situation also tends to create watery environments that are more consistent and more stable than many freshwater environs. Rapid or drastic changes in the condition of the water is more rare in oceans, so the fish accustomed to such environments are overall less tolerant to these types of changes.

This also lends to the fact that saltwater aquarium fish are harder to care for because they don't have the wide range of environmental tolerance such as most freshwater fish do.

aquarium fish tanks
A proper pH balance for saltwater aquarium fish is over 8.3, which means it is slightly on the acidic side. This is the natural pH balance of the water where these kinds of fish evolved. There are mixes available at tropical fish stores which allow you to prepare the water properly and when purchasing your saltwater fish, you should also be provided with information about providing the best environment for your new aquatic tropical aquarium dweller.

Saltwater aquarium fish also generally require more specifics in regard to their dietary needs as compared to their freshwater counterparts. Some saltwater fish are perfectly fine and well nourished with readily available flake food or pellet food options. Other types of saltwater fish are more picky and will only eat frozen dead food sources and some can only survive by eating live food sources.

Of course, the flaked, pelleted or stick varieties of food are cheaper and more convenient, but not all saltwater fish will accept such offerings. However, even if your saltwater fish normally eats pellet or flake food, it is suggested to occasionally provide them with live food as this can trigger fish behaviors that you would not otherwise be able to observe and enjoy.

tropical aquarium
For those who are new to saltwater aquarium fish, it is best to start out with the most hardy, saltwater species that you can find. You should also start with the largest aquarium fish tanks you can afford. A larger sized aquarium means a greater volume of water, which translates into a more stable environment. Damsels are a good choice for first-time saltwater fish owners because they are hardy, affordable and easy to care for.

Tropical fish do require different care than traditional fresh water fish varieties. However, one thing is true for both fresh water tanks and tropical fish tanks…they both require regular maintenance! Use these helpful tips to get through your cleaning, without problems.

1. Always remember to buy the correct size of siphon or vacuum for your tank. If you’re trying to clean a 10 gallon tank with a vacuum meant for a 30 gallon tank, you’ll likely remove more than you really need. In contrast, cleaning a 30 gallon tank with a tiny vacuum could take forever.

2. While some experts say you don’t need to remove all gravel each time you clean the tank, it’s essential you at least clean your gravel vacuum after each use. A vacuum gravel cleaner can collect bacteria or disease if you don’t clean it with hot water after you’ve finished cleaning your tank.

3. In addition, be sure to wash your hands well before handling tropical fish tanks. Any lotions or dirt on your hands could harm the fish.

4. Always use a thermometer when adding new water to a tank. Luke warm to a human will feel hot or boiling to a fish. So, it’s very important to get your replacement water to the proper temperature before adding it to the tank.

5. Never replace more than one third to one fourth of the water in your tank at a time. If you do replace more, your fish could die from nitrification.

6. Never forget to clean your filter regularly!

7. If you don’t need to remove your fish (which you shouldn’t need to for a routine cleaning), don’t! Removing a fish without justifiable cause can make them sick.

General tropical fish tank cleaning should be performed in conjunction with water changes, which means no less often than weekly.

1.Gather your supplies. You will need to prepare water to replace the dirty water you’ll be removing. You can do these with chlorine neutralizer, by allowing it to sit overnight or by using bottled water. You’ll also need to have an empty container on hand for the dirty water removed and a simple siphon-type gravel vacuum (non-battery operated).

2.Begin by clearing all decorations from your fish tank (with the exception of live plants or heavy items). Leave your fish in the tank during the cleaning, unless you are doing a complete “re-start” of your tank. In that case, you’d need to remove all fish, gravel and plants.

3.Start to siphon the dirty water out of the tank, directing it into your container on hand. Be sure to push the siphon through the gravel to help remove fish waste, food and all other debris. After you’ve siphoned up to one third of your tank’s water, allow the debris to settle for five minutes.

4.If there is algae you want to remove from the tank, you’ll need to do so with a stiff brush. Do not use any cleaning agents! Water and “elbow grease” is all that’s required.

5.Slowly add the prepared (clean) water to your tank and allow all debris to settle once more. Many tanks will remain cloudy for up to 24 hours after this process, and then return to a clear state. Clean any items removed (decorations) with clean water before replacing them in the tank.

Heaters are necessary to maintain tropical fish. Before your purchase your heater however, you should make sure that the filters and heater would fit into your aquarium without taking up unnecessary space. If you purchased a small tank, you will need to purchase filters and a heater than will accommodate the tank; otherwise, you may need to purchase a larger tank.

Aquarium heaters are often the first type of equipment that show signs of trouble in the aquarium, and even aquarists using expensive heaters will most likely experience heater failure sooner or later. To safe guard against this, many aquarists purchase two heaters instead of just one.

Aquarium heaters are used in a number of different wattage last. The number of watts aquarium heater will determine how much heat can be generated. Aquarium heaters are totally unsuitable for outdoor use; should they break due to harsh weather, live electrical wires are left lying in wet snow. In recent years, more energy efficient models of de-icers have appeared on the market.

Aquarium heaters are available in hang-on and submersible varieties. Submersible models are attached to the aquarium glass with suction cups. Aquarium heaters are rated for volume of liquid and for temperature differential.

If you want to heat 20 gallons of water (include the volume of liquid in your fermenter in your calculations) about 10 degrees over the average room temperature, you should buy an aquarium heater of 200- 300 watts. Aquarium heaters are just too dirt-cheap against the utopian prices of good refrigeration machines. The catfish tank is not illuminated either, what catfish loves the glaring light?

Aquarium heaters are designed to turn off when the desired temperature is met. The use of a heating pad for warming water may also put you and your family at great risk of shock or fire so please use caution and purchase the proper equipment. Aquarium heaters are essential equipment in the tropical marine aquarium hobby.

Freshwater aquarium systems are extremely common and you may even own one yourself.

While both freshwater and saltwater aquarium systems are similar and use much of the same fish tank equipment, the most significant difference is the chemical composition of the water.

Saltwater aquariums are often referred to as marine aquariums, reef tanks or seawater aquariums.

The most basic differences between fresh water and salt water aquariums include:

•	freshwater is found in most lakes and ponds
•	freshwater contains low concentrations of salts and minerals
•	humans need to drink freshwater to live
•	most fish that live in freshwater can't tolerate salt water
•	salt water is the ocean's water
•	saltwater contains high concentrations of salts and minerals
•	humans can't drink salt water
•	most fish that live in saltwater can't survive in freshwater

Among the advantages of choosing freshwater fish is that the fish will adapt to nearly any type of Aquarium. In addition, freshwater fish are easier to care for than saltwater fish, making a freshwater fish tank ideal for beginners.

Regardless of the type of fish you decide to raise you want to consider tanks first. Saltwater fish tend to do best in reef or salt water fish tanks. These will normally include live rock and coral.

In the wild, fish and other aquatic life have adapted quite well to these two different kinds of water, and the problems they've encountered have little to do with the amount of salt in the water.

In the aquarium, the differences in water chemistry greatly affect your success in the following ways:

•	Saltwater aquariums have less room for error when compared to freshwater setups. Marine fish and invertebrates are more sensitive to slight changes in water quality because they have adapted to the stable environment of the ocean
•	saltwater fish are more difficult to find and tend to be more expensive than freshwater fish because almost all are caught in the wild
•	saltwater fish don't breed in captivity as freshwater fish do, so you cannot produce your own fish
•	marine aquariums are more expensive because they require more equipment to operate and maintain excellent water quality
•	you can place more freshwater fish in an aquarium than saltwater fish
•	freshwater fish survive quite well on flake food while saltwater fish need a mixture of food that includes not only flakes but also frozen and live foods

While freshwater aquarium fish don't offer the beauty and appeal of the fish and invertebrates available to saltwater aquarium hobbyists, most tropical fish experts recommend that beginners start with a freshwater aquarium.

This is sound advice. But that doesn't mean you have to take it. Sure, a marine aquarium setup is a bit more sensitive, but with the proper planning and a commitment to high water quality, you can be successful with your first saltwater aquarium.

Obviously you need to choose the aquarium before anything else. You will find fish tanks that are made of glass and fish tanks that are made of acrylic. You'll find standard rectangular query and was in sizes from 2 1/2 gallons to 220 gallons and more, plus an assortment of hexagonal, pentagonal, and other shapes in various sizes.

So which aquarium should you choose?

First of all get a glass tank. Acrylic tanks have a lot of advantages their lighter and more resistant to jarring and shocks but also have disadvantages such as higher cost an easier scratch ability. For your first fish tank a glass tank will save you much better if for no other reason than that it's cheaper.
Of course, if you are to have access to an acrylic tank it will work fine for your first fish tank. You have to be very careful about scratching it however. Scratches can be buffed out of plastic and not out of glass or plastic is so much more susceptible to scratching the glass that you have managed to make frequent use of this advantage.

What shape?

You should choose a rectangular aquariums. In addition to being less expensive on a capacity for capacity basis, rectangular fish tanks also are the most efficient in shape, since they maximize service area. Service area is the most significant factor in determining the carrying capacity of an aquarium since it is at the surface and only at the surface that gas exchange-oxygen in, carbon dioxide out-occurs. The total volume of the water held by a tank is of less importance than that tanks surface area in determining its suitability for housing fish.

Let's first consider the size and shape of the front viewing panel. Some tanks are very squat, low and wide they are called “breeder” tanks because they offer maximum service and bottom areas for a given volume and are of greater utility. Tall narrow tanks are called “show tanks” because they are aesthetically more pleasing.

You can breed fish in show tanks and many gorgeous ornamental aquariums are of breeder tank proportions, but the names reflect this general difference. Basically the more square-like the front viewing glass, the more ornamental the tank seems. On the other hand the more square-like the bottom panel glass, the more efficient and practical tank becomes.

There's an interesting contradiction here. One thing that makes people ooh and ahh about an aquarium is beautiful aquatic plants. Less a planet tank is certainly more "showy" than a non-planet one. Show tanks, however, are less suitable for growing plants. The extra water depth means that you have to have high intensity lighting if you want healthy plants, and this lighting is relatively very expensive.

What size fish tank?

It may sound counterintuitive, but your chance of success is greater with a larger tank. The reason for this is simple: the larger the aquarium, the more the way you have in making mistakes. Remember that waste management is of primary concern. With a very large amount of water you have longer to catch problems and correct them before they become catastrophes.

There is also psychological factor. People naturally want a nice assortment of fish for aesthetic reasons, so there is a "mental minimum" in choosing the tank inhabitants. For many people, this minimum far exceeds the carrying capacity of the smaller tanks, the larger tank provide enough room for almost anyone's idea of the basic assortment of tropical fish.

Larger tanks are superior in terms of temperature regulation. The science behind this intuitive answer is that service area and volume are not in a linear relationship: a body loses heat through its surface, but the amount of heat contains a function of its volume. Thus the thermal stability of a larger aquarium is many times greater than that of a small aquarium, and very small tanks are downright precarious with regard to temperature regulation.

A short power outage on a Winter's night can chill a 10 gallon tank lethally while a modern 50 gallon tank in the same room might suffer only a tiny drop in temperature. Likewise, a stuck heater in the small tank will cook the fish rather quickly, but with a large tank you could have considerable time to notice the problem before it reached at the proportions.

When you couple this with the safety buffer of the larger size in terms of waste management, you realize that making a small aquarium requires a considerable knowledge and skills but that even a complete beginner has a good chance of succeeding with a large tank. How big is bigger than big enough? There is no set answer to that question, as there are so many factors involved.

An expert aquarist might keep a 5 gallon tank with three carries in a very successful for years, while newcomer might dump of a hundred fish into a 40 gallon tank and kill them all and shorter. Given that all other things are equal, I would set the minimum size of the tank that you should as a beginner obtain is 20 gallons, but larger would be better.

A very popular standard 55 gallon aquarium is not ideal for the from the fish's point of view, being a tall show titanium, but it has a respectable volume, it looks really nice, and it is often available as a combo special, being on sale with tank and full hood for a very reasonable price. It is often available cheaper than a 40 gallon tank. Likewise a 10 gallon aquarium often costs less than a 5 gallon tank, but I do not recommend the very popular 10 gallon tank; it's just not big enough.

The all- around choice for the best tank for beginner is one of the least popular sizes. In fact you'll probably have to order one since very few stores stock in-it's a gay stock size, but one for which there is not a great demand; it also might cost more than the more popular 55 gallon size that tank is the 50 gallon, sometimes called the 50 breeder.

It is 36 inches long, with the other two dimensions being 18 inches 18 inches wide and 18 inches tall. Can it be an ornamental tank? Well, I own one that has been in on and off use for going on for decades. The last five years it has been a focal point in my dining room, and one of my daughters, for who fish have no value other than decorative, considers that her second favorite of all my aquariums.

Bottom line is first the tank itself is typically not the major cost of setting up in acquiring, even for very large, very expensive tanks. Second, because the cost of a 10 gallon tank is so low to begin with, its resale value is practically nil, while larger tanks are often in demand. Last but not least, the cost of a 50 gallon tank low enough that it does not cost very much to get a good start in the fish in the fish keeping hobby. So do yourself a favor and buy a large tank.

Just as there are different types, there are different types of aquariums. the purpose for which a tank is being setup can affect the system as much as will the types of fish being included. some of the following setups are unlikely to be first tanks, but all of them could be.

Any division of aquarium types is going to be arbitrary to the extent that many people want to have tanks that serve several functions. the following list of fish tank types is meant to present the various options and functions as independently as possible the list can be mixed and matched.

1. Decorative Tanks
The most common fish tank, a decorative tank is an aquarium designed to be an ornamental addition to a home's decor. Every aquarium can be setup to function as a decorative aquarium. Breeding and fry-raising tanks, however, tend to be less decorative in nature. A typical decorative tank is designed and organized to look decorative and beautiful in the home or office.

One person;s idea of beautiful me be another's idea of hideous, but that is true in tastes in paintings, wallpaper, and many other things. What is most important in designing an ornamental aquarium is ensuring that the components selected please your sense of asthetics and also combine to produce a healthy aquatic environment.

2. Theme Tanks
A "theme" aquarium combines elements around a central idea. You can organize your tank around a color theme or a decorative theme. The possibilities for other types of themes are endless. Some effective tanks focus on a particular geographical region, and are called biotope tanks.

Besides colors, what other theme ideas cna you use to setup an aquarium? Another option is to focus on a particular type of fish. Or a tank in which all the fish are long or striped or catfish and more. A thematic community tans is the most popular, including the fish which appeal most to the fish tank's owner.

3. Biotope Tanks
Many aquarium fish enthusiasts enjoy trying to recreate a very specific natural environment. This is known as a biotope aquarium. The tank can be organized simply as, for example, "plants and fish from Asia" or more specific as fish and plants from Sri Lanka. For a first tank, the easiest apporach is to be somewhat less specific.

4. Species Tanks
Fish can be kept as only a single species in a tank. This is especially true, and preferred, when the fish can be killed by or kill other fish. Many fish don't necessarily have to be kept separate, but can be shown off better when kept by themselves. This is the case with schooling species, where the appearance behavior of the school are as fascinating and interesting as those of individual fish.

5. Instructional Tanks
Aquariums, sometimes with just a few goldfish are used for educational purposes in elementary classrooms, sometimes playing role in the curriculum. Fish tank setups in schools and marine aquariums are tailored to the students at different levels. High school science classes are enhanced when they include one or more aquariums for specific instructional purposes. At the university level, aquariums of various types are used in conjunction with studies in ecology, oceanography, genetics, and various other fields.

6. Breeding Tanks
Most tropical fish are bred on fish farms in Florida an Southeast Asia. Some are wild-caught. Breeding tanks are an important part of many aquarist's setups. The term "breeding tank" is reserved for a tank established expressly for the purpose of propagating a particular species of fish. Many species of fish, however, will breed regularly in any tank. In the community setting, though, few if any of the fry will survive. A breeding tank is set up to maximize the chance of spawning and the chance of survival for the young fish.

7. Fry Rearing Tanks
Fry tanks are normally utilitarian in design, often containing only a filter, the fish, and water. High feeding rates and frequently required water changes facilitate a lack of substrate and decor, which could trap food and waste particles, These tanks don't have to be so sparse. Fry will frow very well in planted tanks tanks - even planted community tanks, provided all the fish placed together are of similar sizes.

Many fish species can be purchases as very young juveniles at discounted prices. when only the fry are places into a tank, the spaciousness of the tank will contribute to rapid growth of the entire group.

8. Pet Tanks
It may be surprising, but many fish become tame pets that can interact with their keepers. It is not unusual for such fish to mope when the owner is away and they are cared for by someone else, or to show excitement when the owner returns.

Cichlids are the most popular pet type of fish, but many large catfish can be kept this way also. Goldfish, Koi, pacu and other large species can be kept as single pets in a big aquarium. Many of these fish school naturally, but as lone pets they will accept the human companion into their school.

Whatever type of fish tank you choose, you must select the proper fish to fit into your plan. There are several ideas for stocking themes to consider.

Setting up a saltwater aquarium does not take a lot of effort other than preparation. Choose your tank material, size and style. Choose system set up such as filtration, lighting and power. Choose your substrate nitrogen cycling process. Choose the fish species and learn how to care for each type.

Choose care items, reef, plant life etc. Learn about fish disease, care and treatment. Learn about water PH and temperatures needed. Once these areas are completed you can begin the true set up process. You will first want to clean your aquarium with freshwater and a sponge.

Apply your background or paint the exterior. Put your stand in place and level it. Then place aquarium on stands and level it. Prepare any additional steps as suggested by the kit instructions. Fill, use dechlorinator, and set up filtration system and so on.

Detailed instructions for a step-by-step process are located in aquarium kit or available online. You can also speak with a pet store representative for assistance. Some pet stores will offer the assistance of an experienced aquarium set up with the purchase of an aquarium.

Speak to your local store representative for details. Once your tank or aquarium is set up and functioning it is simply a matter of maintenance form then on out. Cleaning of your tank is important to keep fish fecal matter from causing illnesses or from clogging your filtration system.

The use of a blenny can help prevent excessive algae buildup, as this is the creatures diet. You will find that over time it’s simply a part of your routine and that joy surpasses work with your aquarium.

By searching online, visiting a local pet store or by reading books at your local library you can prepare yourself with the knowledge of tropical fish species, care and saltwater aquarium setup. You will want to of course know which area of your home you wish to place your aquarium and take measurements for proper fit. You can choose from lovely glass and wood aquariums and bases or durable Plexiglas models in a range of colors and shapes. The fish available are too many to mention all together.

Instead here are few that are popular amongst fish lovers. There are bicolor angelfish, blennies, butterfly fish, cardinal fish, clownfish, gobies and dotty backs. All are unique in their appearance, shape and size. It is best to do research in which fish commune best with which other species.

This prevents fighting and ultimately the loss of a fish life. Once you have prepared yourself with knowledge and you have purchased your materials and any tool you may need you can install and enjoy. All can enjoy the peace and beauty of your saltwater aquarium. Maintenance will be a breeze with proper knowledge and preparation. You will find that your aquarium is deeply satisfying for years and years to come.

Selecting a tropical fish aquarium may seem difficult, but in fact it can be a breeze by following some basic tips. Before you purchase a tank you should always know where you want to set up your tank and the measurements of the space. You are advised to be able to provide room for a tank between 20 to 30 gallons.

This is a good size for maintaining the balanced environment for your fish. This is also a great way to not be at a loss for money if you decide keeping fish is not for you. This is a much safer choice than choosing a huge deluxe aquarium. You will next want to choose between acrylic models or a glass model.

Acrylic is a bit pricier, but it does provide better insulation than glass. A glass tank however is easier to manage and does not scratch as easy as an acrylic tank. Once you choose your aquarium keep in mind how the tank will be supported. A 20-gallon tank that is full weighs 225 pounds. A television stand would not be able to support such a tank. A stand that is made specifically for holding an aquarium is advised.

You could build a stand and save yourself some money, as stands can be costly. Some other materials you will need include a filtration system, light, cleaning supplies, water conditioner, air pump, thermometer and gravel. These are the basic items needed to begin the set up process for your aquarium. If you are interested in learning more about aquariums you can find an abundance of information on the Internet and at your local library. You are sure to be inspired as to which tank is best for you.

Learning to care for freshwater fish and your aquarium is not complex. Simply learning about the type of fish you want to care for and how to properly is what you really need. You can teach yourself how to care for a specific type of fish by searching online or by reading a book on your specific type of fish.

Understanding what your fish require in their environment such as heat, light, etc as well as what their nutritional needs are will keep your fish healthy and thriving. Knowing this information will allow you to understand what supplies you need for your fish. First choose an aquarium that is between 20 to 30 gallons or more especially if you want to keep a large amount of fish. You will need to choose between acrylic or glass aquariums.

Glass lasts longer as it does not scratch as easily and it is less expensive if it must be replaced. Acrylic tanks are better insulated but can cost three to five times more than a glass tank. The supplies needed for your fish will include the tank, a light, filter, cleaning supplies, aquarium hood, air pump, heater, aerator, rocks, thermometer and gravel.

Also needed are plants either plastic or living and fish food to your list. Be sure to know what types of food are best for your fish’s health. Also make sure your tank is supported properly and that your tropical fish are in a healthy location in your home or office. The health of your fish should always be your number one priority. Simply following these easy steps will allow you to care properly for your freshwater fish and provide them a good life.

You have so many more options today for buying aquariums than ever before. There are four main areas to search for your aquarium. These four venues include a pet store, online, a major grocery chain or the newspaper. Each of these places offers aquariums and pet care supplies. A pet store is always a good place to purchase pets or their supplies.

Be sure that the pet store is clean and that the fish are cared for in clean tanks. If it is clean and hazard free than this is a good place to ask and view some aquarium choices. You never want to buy from a shady looking pet store even if prices are cheap. These locations often go through puppy mills or exotic black market trades and should not be supported.

Shopping online is easier and safer than ever. You can view color photos, dimension specifics and clear prices for aquariums and fish care supplies. The benefits of online shopping can include sales and additional information. You can often find lists of supplies, fish care information and more.

Most major grocery chains carry pet supplies and even pets such as fish and hamster. They are convenient and often offer a 3-day replacement guarantee for deceased fish. The downside is that these fish often do die and the problem of replacing these fish constantly makes it a big turn off. The newspaper will often offer used aquariums and supplies.

Always check these items out for defects or damages before you purchase them. The options are out there and you have a great opportunity to find an aquarium and to find it at an affordable price.

Caring for freshwater fish is not complex instead it is simply a matter of learning about the type of fish you are interested in and how to properly do so. You can learn how to care for a specific type of fish by searching online or by either purchasing or checking out a book on your specific type of fish.

You have to understand what they require for their environment (heat, light, etc.) and what nutritional needs they have. This will allow you to understand what supplies you need for your fish. Choose an aquarium that is 20 to 30 gallons or more if you want a large amount of fish.

Selecting the right aquarium for your home can be simple if you follow some basic tips. First thing is first, you should think about where you will set up the aquarium in your home then measure the space before selecting an freshwater of saltwater aquarium. Mini tanks are becoming popular but they are hard to maintain a balanced environment and fish often die due to this.

It is suggested to but a 20 to 30 gallon fish tank. It is not as expensive as the deluxe models and if you find that caring for fish is not for you, you will not be out a ton of money.

You will also want to choose between and acrylic or a glass model. Acrylic is more expensive, but it does allow for more natural light flow. A glass tank is easier to manage and does not scratch as easy. Once you find your tropical fish tank consider how it will be supported.

A 20-gallon tank filled weighs 225 pounds. A bookshelf would not be able to support this tank. A stand that is made specifically for holding an aquarium is best.

The other materials you will need include a filtration system, light, cleaning supplies, water conditioner, air pump, thermometer and gravel. These are the basic items needed to set up your aquarium. You can find other tips for selecting an aquarium online or through a fish care book that you can come across at your local library.

No matter how big or small or the material your fish tank is made of, you are sure to find the perfect aquarium for you and your family.

First of all, you'll want to get a real history of fish keeping, so that you will know the best ways to tend to the species of fish you are interested in caring for. Fish keeping is believed to have begun thousands of years ago in Asian countries such as Japan and China, as well as several sections of Europe. Pools of carp were kept in ponds of the wealthy in Europe, mainly to be used as a meat substitute during religious holidays when meat was not allowed.

Asian fish keeping focused more on keeping the fish as pets than food. The tropical fish hobbyist was able to raise domesticated forms of the koi and goldfish in Asia, and you can still see varieties of these fish in man-made fountains and ponds at Chinese restaurants in your area. These tropical fish are especially enjoyable to look at, since they are usually very bright in color and have a peaceful temperament.

If you think you may want to be a tropical fish hobbyist for a living, you should also know how this hobby will work for you once you turn it into a business. Fish keeping is a booming business all over the world, and is a multi-billion dollar industry. The United States is actually the largest world market for this industry, since there have been almost 10 fish per household across the country in recent years.

As a tropical fish hobbyist, you should also know the technical sides of caring for the fish you’ve chosen. For instance, maintaining a clean and safe aquarium for your fish is important.
The water must be kept at a certain temperature for tropical fish--which is usually very cold--and other factors must be taken into consideration when setting up the tank, such as the water conditions.

The water must be virtually bacteria free, and some tropical fish will need water with more sodium, or sand at the bottom of the tank in order to simulate the ocean. If you want to find out how you can be a tropical fish hobbyist in your area, you can always ask your local pet store for details on fish breeders and hobbyists in your area.

Aquarium care requires you to take care of the aquarium plants and other tank accessories. You need to pay daily attention to your aquarium and your pet fish. It is important to ensure proper and timely cleaning of the aquarium, to maintain the temperature of the water and the lightning schemes and placing of other accessories.

Before putting in water into the fish tank it is important to condition the water to ensure quality. Presence of chlorine and an excess of dissolved gases in the water can have a really bad impact of the health of the fishes.

You can condition water by making it stand for a week or two before putting in the fish. This process of conditioning helps facilitating an exchange of gas between the water and air, also helps the fine particles to settle out, makes life impossible for the fish parasites to thrive and also gives the bacteria in the water adequate time to strike as balance.

You can also avail yourself of certain chemicals to get rid of the chlorine and chloramines from the water. There is nothing to be alarmed about if the water turns cloudy after few days. This is an absolute natural phenomenon caused due to the presence of the bacteria and is sure to clear itself within a week.
