If you’re new to the saltwater world, you may think choosing types of saltwater fish for aquariums involves picking your favorite colors out. However, not all saltwater fish are compatible and knowing which fish live harmoniously with others is vital.

Predators And Prey

It’s common sense to know larger predatory fish will eat other small fish, so if you want to use Groupers, Hawks, Snappers and other predatory fish you might want to keep them in a tank all their own.

Territorial Fish

This problem almost always happens if you add a new fish to an established tank of fish. Usually when you add all new fish at one time, the fish will figure out their territories without too much problem. However, this is common when similar species of fish attack other species or types.

Mate Protection

Many times if you have a mated pair of fish, they will attack others. The same sexed fish will usually go after another same sex fish which you newly introduced. Thus, it’s wise to limit your tank to one specific mated species. It’s also vital for you to give the fish plenty of space to get away, if necessary.

Spawn Protective Fish

This can occur if you have a nest area, where the mother fish will protect her spawn from other fish which may stray into their area of nesting. You might want to keep all spawning fish in captivity so they will not be aggressive with your other species of fish.

Learning about the specific aggressive attitudes of various types of saltwater fish for aquariums is important to create a harmonious environment in your saltwater fish tank. In addition to thinking about their attitudes, you must also consider the different dietary needs of the fish you choose and the other requirements they need to thrive.

The beauty of saltwater aquarium fish can't be beat, and many people who maintain tanks make the decision to undertake the effort and cost required to own these fish in exchange for the stunning visual effects.

If you are in the market for a saltwater fish tank and wonder which among the top saltwater aquarium fish for hobbyists would be right up your ally.

The lionfish is among the top saltwater aquarium fish for hobbyists. You should be very careful with this fish because of it's extremely poisonous spikes. Since this fish can grow to a very large size, it should be offered a large enough aquarium to live in.

Clownfish have become widely popular with the Pixar movie Finding Nemo. They are gorgeous, small, and very easy to maintain in the home tank. Remember that while clownfish are among the top saltwater aquarium fish for hobbyists, they must be kept together with sea anemones, with which they have a symbiotic relationship.

Challenging to take care of, the colorful dragonets can be kept alive if there are enough spineless creatures for food. Several experts have recommended that you maintain a second habitat area for dragonets, but unless you are sure that you have the space available you should stock your tank to maintain the organism's survival.

The lionfish is king of the saltwater aquarium fish for hobbyists. You should be very careful with this fish because of it's extremely poisonous spikes. Moreover, since this fish can grow quite large, it should be offered an amply sized habitat.

Clownfish have become widely popular with the Pixar movie Finding Nemo. These fish are beautiful, don't take up much room in your saltwater fish tank, and are low-maintenance. It's important not to forget that, although clownfish are extremely popular saltwater aquarium fish, it is essential that they are maintained in the same tank as sea anemones due to the fact that they have a symbiotic relationship with them that is needed for the clownfish to thrive.

Dragonets are beautifully colored and hard to keep alive, unless you ensure that a steady stream of small invertebrates is available as a food source. Some professionals suggest that hobbyists provide a secondary habitat for these invertebrates, but if you are uncertain that the level of availability is perfect for your dragonets, then stocking your tank is a must to ensure continued survival.

Many people choose to set up saltwater fish tanks because they love the thought of being able to bring a bit of the sea into their home. There are many different choices when it comes to setting up saltwater fish tanks.

So, before you dive into the process be sure to consider your choices and create a plan of action. Choosing what type of saltwater fish tanks is the first step. Here are a few choices you’ll be facing!

You can always choose to setup a saltwater tank with only fish in it. This is an option many people choose; however it’s not the simplest overall option. If you only have fish in your tank, you’ll be forced to test the water more frequently. If you have other organisms (sea-life) in your tank, your tank’s nitrogen cycle will be shorter and it will be more self-maintaining.

If you’d like to create a more natural tank, you can choose to combine fish with live rocks. Live rocks are rocks with live organisms living without their surfaces. The creatures which live on these rocks help with the tank’s nitrogen cycle and help control the aquarium environment. They work similar to a filtration system, constantly helping to refresh the tank’s water.

Another type of saltwater fish tank is called a reef tank. These tanks focus mostly on coral and other reef structures. Fish can live in these tanks, but the main focus is the reef collection. It can be expensive to maintain this type of saltwater tanks and require experience and commitment.

After you finally get your saltwater tank all set up and full of beautiful fish, you’ll need to create a maintenance schedule for your tank. Saltwater tropical fish tank require similar maintenance to freshwater tanks. Use these tips to keep your tank clear and your fish healthy!

1. Be sure to change ¼ of your tank’s water each month. You can do this at one time or you can do smaller water changes throughout the month. Most tropical fish prefer you to make several smaller water changes throughout the month, to avoid PH shock. By changing your water in small increments you’ll help reduce nitrates and phosphates, which can harm your aquarium environment and your fish. Always be sure your replacement water is the same salinity, temperature and PH of the water you’re removing.

2. Once a month you should clean your filter and protein skimmers. These items are vital to keeping your water clean and the tank free of pollutants. If you don’t clean them monthly you’ll find yourself with a tank full of nitrates, phosphates, algae and unhealthy fish.

3. Every two months you should take the time to clean all pumps and power heads. This will help their flow levels stay clear and working properly. If you use dirty pumps heat can be radiated into the tank and be dangerous for the fish.

4. Be sure to never use harsh chemicals when cleaning your tank, decorations or any pumps and filters. Chemical residues may not completely rinse off during cleaning and you may find your fish dead after introducing the “cleaned” item back into the tank. You can purchase specific aquarium cleaning solutions or use water and an extremely small amount of simple vinegar.

When it comes to marine aquariums the most challenging and expensive is a reef aquarium. These aquariums are filled primarily with corals and other invertebrates, with actually very little to no fish. The corals and invertebrates are the main focus of the reef aquarium and require careful planning as well as regular maintenance.

The first step is to assemble your aquarium and cure the live rock. Add sand to the bottom of the tank and prepare your saltwater in a mixing container so that the specific gravity is exactly 1.025. Use a small bucket of the prepared saltwater to rinse the live rock and remove any organic debris and then arrange them in the tank as desired.

The protein skimmer and main filtration system should be run to have constant water movement, but the lights should be off at this time so there is no undesirable algae growth. For a period of four weeks you should change fifty percent of the water in order to cure your live rock.

Any organic matter should be siphoned out at this time. You also want to test for ammonia and nitrite to ensure they are at zero. The pH should also be tested and should ideally be between 8.1 and 8.4.

Next add the first inhabitants. First is a thirty gallon deluxe algae attack pack with snails and crabs. Follow the acclimation guidelines and be sure to turn the lights on and off every twelve hours for two weeks. At this time you can add your corals with a twenty-five percent water change and an acclimation period of two weeks.

On week eight you can add aqua-cultured corals and give them an acclimation period of two weeks. Lastly, on weeks ten and twelve you can introduce fish and invertebrates with a twenty-five percent water change and a two week acclimation.

Freshwater aquarium systems are extremely common and you may even own one yourself.

While both freshwater and saltwater aquarium systems are similar and use much of the same fish tank equipment, the most significant difference is the chemical composition of the water.

Saltwater aquariums are often referred to as marine aquariums, reef tanks or seawater aquariums.

The most basic differences between fresh water and salt water aquariums include:

•	freshwater is found in most lakes and ponds
•	freshwater contains low concentrations of salts and minerals
•	humans need to drink freshwater to live
•	most fish that live in freshwater can't tolerate salt water
•	salt water is the ocean's water
•	saltwater contains high concentrations of salts and minerals
•	humans can't drink salt water
•	most fish that live in saltwater can't survive in freshwater

Among the advantages of choosing freshwater fish is that the fish will adapt to nearly any type of Aquarium. In addition, freshwater fish are easier to care for than saltwater fish, making a freshwater fish tank ideal for beginners.

Regardless of the type of fish you decide to raise you want to consider tanks first. Saltwater fish tend to do best in reef or salt water fish tanks. These will normally include live rock and coral.

In the wild, fish and other aquatic life have adapted quite well to these two different kinds of water, and the problems they've encountered have little to do with the amount of salt in the water.

In the aquarium, the differences in water chemistry greatly affect your success in the following ways:

•	Saltwater aquariums have less room for error when compared to freshwater setups. Marine fish and invertebrates are more sensitive to slight changes in water quality because they have adapted to the stable environment of the ocean
•	saltwater fish are more difficult to find and tend to be more expensive than freshwater fish because almost all are caught in the wild
•	saltwater fish don't breed in captivity as freshwater fish do, so you cannot produce your own fish
•	marine aquariums are more expensive because they require more equipment to operate and maintain excellent water quality
•	you can place more freshwater fish in an aquarium than saltwater fish
•	freshwater fish survive quite well on flake food while saltwater fish need a mixture of food that includes not only flakes but also frozen and live foods

While freshwater aquarium fish don't offer the beauty and appeal of the fish and invertebrates available to saltwater aquarium hobbyists, most tropical fish experts recommend that beginners start with a freshwater aquarium.

This is sound advice. But that doesn't mean you have to take it. Sure, a marine aquarium setup is a bit more sensitive, but with the proper planning and a commitment to high water quality, you can be successful with your first saltwater aquarium.

The following list was compiled from online surveys from fish lovers across the nation. These fish are only ten of the millions of tropical fish that make our oceans home. For details on these fish species or other tropical saltwater fish you can search online or visit your local library.

•Angel fish-colorful bodies with a heavenly name

•Blenny- a blenny might not be striking physically but it keeps your tank looking breathtaking

•Butterfly fish-they float like a butterfly and swim like a fish

•Cardinal fish-Not the pope but just as respected by the fish community

•Clownfish- they won’t tell you a joke but they sure can capture an audience

•Damsel fish-if your fish is in distress call Dudley do-right

•Dragonets-not a fire breather but it’s been around just as long

•Saltwater eel-not as tasty as saltwater taffy but defiantly eye candy

•Dotty backs- spots may be last season for you and me but they are a classic for a dotty

Saltwater aquarium fish come in all shapes, sizes and colors. There beauty, their elegance and there underwater home fascinate us. Many of us will never see these sea creatures in their own habitat but a home aquarium fills that desire.

If you would like to find your favorite fish or simply fill your home with fins and gills then visit your local pet store and begin your under water journey. The amazement of the underwater world is at your fingertips.

For proper setup of a saltwater aquarium you can find the step-by-step details in three locations. First is a local pet store. Knowledgeable representatives can help guide you in your process.

Some locations will even have experienced individuals make a house visit for assistance with installation.

Second are online resources. There are numerous sites that can help you with installation as well as maintenance tips.

Third is your local library. You can find numerous books on saltwater aquarium set up, aquarium care and fish care all in one location.

Below is a list of four basic setup steps for general idea generation. These steps are as follows:

1.Clean your tank or aquarium with freshwater and a sponge or cloth. Do not leave behind any cloth fibers.

2.Apply your outside background or paint it the color of your choice. Once applied and or paint is dry move to your next step.

3.Place your aquarium stand in place. Level your aquarium.

4.Prepare all equipment and install as directions state.

Detailed instructions often come with the purchase of your aquarium and kit items. If this is not the case printable instructions can be found online. Setting up a saltwater aquarium may seem complex in the beginning but after installation you’ll feel like a professional.

Setting up a saltwater aquarium does not take a lot of effort other than preparation. Choose your tank material, size and style. Choose system set up such as filtration, lighting and power. Choose your substrate nitrogen cycling process. Choose the fish species and learn how to care for each type.

Choose care items, reef, plant life etc. Learn about fish disease, care and treatment. Learn about water PH and temperatures needed. Once these areas are completed you can begin the true set up process. You will first want to clean your aquarium with freshwater and a sponge.

Apply your background or paint the exterior. Put your stand in place and level it. Then place aquarium on stands and level it. Prepare any additional steps as suggested by the kit instructions. Fill, use dechlorinator, and set up filtration system and so on.

Detailed instructions for a step-by-step process are located in aquarium kit or available online. You can also speak with a pet store representative for assistance. Some pet stores will offer the assistance of an experienced aquarium set up with the purchase of an aquarium.

Speak to your local store representative for details. Once your tank or aquarium is set up and functioning it is simply a matter of maintenance form then on out. Cleaning of your tank is important to keep fish fecal matter from causing illnesses or from clogging your filtration system.

The use of a blenny can help prevent excessive algae buildup, as this is the creatures diet. You will find that over time it’s simply a part of your routine and that joy surpasses work with your aquarium.

A well-planned and cared for saltwater aquarium is comparable to a work of art. The splashes of color from each tropical fish add a vibrant touch to any room. The tranquil bobbing of fish can soothe away a days worth of stress. Corals and plant life bring nature indoors for a breath of fresh air under water.

By searching online, visiting a local pet store or by reading books at your local library you can prepare yourself with the knowledge of tropical fish species, care and saltwater aquarium setup. You will want to of course know which area of your home you wish to place your aquarium and take measurements for proper fit. You can choose from lovely glass and wood aquariums and bases or durable Plexiglas models in a range of colors and shapes. The fish available are too many to mention all together.

Instead here are few that are popular amongst fish lovers. There are bicolor angelfish, blennies, butterfly fish, cardinal fish, clownfish, gobies and dotty backs. All are unique in their appearance, shape and size. It is best to do research in which fish commune best with which other species.

This prevents fighting and ultimately the loss of a fish life. Once you have prepared yourself with knowledge and you have purchased your materials and any tool you may need you can install and enjoy. All can enjoy the peace and beauty of your saltwater aquarium. Maintenance will be a breeze with proper knowledge and preparation. You will find that your aquarium is deeply satisfying for years and years to come.
