Any you add to the outside or the inside of a fish tank is considered a decoration and is designed to enhance the overall viewing of your tank. While decorations can technically be anything you want there are a few guidelines you need to follow.
If you place a decoration in the tank it should be inert because if it reacts to water then the item will be affected over time and this can affect the overall health of your fish.
When it comes to fish tank decorations the first thing you need to consider is safety. You should only buy your decorations from pet stores. However, still make sure the products are painted with inferior paints which can add toxins to the water.
Before placing any item in your fish tank make sure it is cleaned and rinsed. If you don’t do this you can be adding potential disease to the tank and contaminating the water. You also don’t want to add any fish tank decorations with sharp edges since these can injure your fish.
However, you still want to have some fun when choosing fish tank decorations. To do this it is a good idea to come have a view in your head of the finished tank and then sketch it on paper.
It is always better to go to the store with specific fish tank decorations in mind rather than going on a shopping spree and returning home to find you have many fish tank decorations you can’t use. It can even be a good idea to have a theme in mind for your fish tank.
