Food is an obvious necessity for keeping fish healthy in captivity as well as in the wild.

Nowadays it is possible to raise and even breed fish 100 percent with prepared foods purchased online, at the pet store or at the local grocery store.

The combination of nutrition and taste of today’s prepared fish foods appeal to fish almost as much as live or frozen foods. There are many choices of prepared foods available for your tropical fish.

Dry Prepared Fish Foods

There are hundreds of flake, tablet, and “stick” foods for tropical fish on the market. There are general types of foods for mixtures of fishes, and there are also formulations for specific breeds that may be carnivorous, herbivorous, marine, and bottom-feeding, as well as even more specific foods for cichlids, goldfish, koi, guppies, and bettas.

There are foods that float and some that sink, and there are others that are somewhere in between, sinking very slowly to allow all types of fish to feed.

Flake food typically contains a variety of types so that surface feeders and bottom feeders both get their share, while the mid-feeders catch the flakes while they slowly sink.

It is best to offer your tropical fish a variety of fish foods, both to prevent boredom and to make sure the fish are getting all the trace nutrients and mineral they need to thrive and grow.

Most often a combination of types of prepared dry foods work best for a community of aquarium fish. You can choose from flake foods, pellets, sticks and wafers.

By using a variety of brands and types of dry fish foods, you can provide your tropical fish with an interesting and nutritious diet.

Also, by alternating between several types of dried fish foods, you can prevent your fish from getting tired of one kind, and you can make sure to cover any nutritional deficiencies that might exist.

Learn More about Fish Food Options, like Freeze Dried Foods, Frozen Foods and Live Foods in the forthcoming Part Two of “The Foods Fish Need to Stay Healthy” series of articles. These types of foods have specific applications and should be understood and used carefully.

The best approach is not to buy the smallest and least expensive tropical fish tank because you want to save money.

A saltwater aquarium, and any aquarium for that matter, is a big investment in money and time, so don’t go halfway. Make sure you’ll have what you really need.

A tank that is too small can become a problem and take much more time to maintain than a tank that is the right size for your needs.

A few decades ago, plate glass tanks and goldfish bowls were the standard. Many of the tanks sold then were framed in metal and came in standard 10, 20, and 55-gallon rectangular sizes.

Thanks to the development of modern plastics, aquariums now come in wide variety of sizes and interesting shapes.

Both glass and acrylic tanks are available for freshwater or saltwater fish tanks. Each type of tank has distinct advantages and disadvantages.

Glass and acrylic tanks can be purchased as “reef ready” tanks. This means the tanks is predrilled with holes for equipment and plumbing, but this can be a bit more expensive.

Classic Glass Tanks -

Glass tanks are sealed with silicone rubber cement. Althought the most common aquarium design is rectangular, glass tanks are availble in a wide variety of multi-sided shapes like hexagon and octagon.

Glass tanks have the advantage of not scratching as easily as acrylic tanks.

Glass tanks can be heavy, however, and the larger the tank, the thicker and heavier the glass. Keep this in mind when coosing a location for your new tank.

Most modern glass aquariums have plastic frames rather than metal. The plastic frames provide stability as well as attractiveness. The frames come in a variety of colors and styles for matching your home’s decor.

The glass used for modern fish tanks may be be either plated or tempered glass. The important thing to rememeber is if you plan to drill holes in your glass aquarium for filter plumbing, make sure it is plate glass.

Glass aquariums are still the most common, but acrylic aquariums have their own distinct advantages and disadvantages. Acrylic fish tanks are becoming increasingly popular.

Unique Acrylic Fish Tanks -

Acrylic fish tanks are molded as a single piece with few seams. This makes them more transparent, but you do get some distortion of the tank inhabitants at the corners. Acrylic aquariums are also lighter than glass and are offered in more shapes and sizes than glass aquariums. Acrylic tends to be a stronger material than glass, so it doesn’t break or shatter as easily.

Acrylic fish tanks do, however, scratch easily and can also be quite a bit more expensive than glass. Algae scrapers and tank decorations can also cause damage to the tank when not properly handled. Although not easy to repair, scratches in the acrylic can be buffed out with special scratch remover kits.

When selecting and aquarium, whether acrylic or glass, be sure to select a tank with no scatches. Also check that no areas are devoid of silicone by closely inspecting the seams. And always check any item ordered online, especially a fish tank, to ensure there has been no damage in shipping.

Take pictures and contact the shipper if you have concerns about the condition of the fish tank and accessories that you purchase online.

Freshwater aquarium systems are extremely common and you may even own one yourself.

While both freshwater and saltwater aquarium systems are similar and use much of the same fish tank equipment, the most significant difference is the chemical composition of the water.

Saltwater aquariums are often referred to as marine aquariums, reef tanks or seawater aquariums.

The most basic differences between fresh water and salt water aquariums include:

•	freshwater is found in most lakes and ponds
•	freshwater contains low concentrations of salts and minerals
•	humans need to drink freshwater to live
•	most fish that live in freshwater can’t tolerate salt water
•	salt water is the ocean’s water
•	saltwater contains high concentrations of salts and minerals
•	humans can’t drink salt water
•	most fish that live in saltwater can’t survive in freshwater

Among the advantages of choosing freshwater fish is that the fish will adapt to nearly any type of Aquarium. In addition, freshwater fish are easier to care for than saltwater fish, making a freshwater fish tank ideal for beginners.

Regardless of the type of fish you decide to raise you want to consider tanks first. Saltwater fish tend to do best in reef or salt water fish tanks. These will normally include live rock and coral.

In the wild, fish and other aquatic life have adapted quite well to these two different kinds of water, and the problems they’ve encountered have little to do with the amount of salt in the water.

In the aquarium, the differences in water chemistry greatly affect your success in the following ways:

•	Saltwater aquariums have less room for error when compared to freshwater setups. Marine fish and invertebrates are more sensitive to slight changes in water quality because they have adapted to the stable environment of the ocean
•	saltwater fish are more difficult to find and tend to be more expensive than freshwater fish because almost all are caught in the wild
•	saltwater fish don’t breed in captivity as freshwater fish do, so you cannot produce your own fish
•	marine aquariums are more expensive because they require more equipment to operate and maintain excellent water quality
•	you can place more freshwater fish in an aquarium than saltwater fish
•	freshwater fish survive quite well on flake food while saltwater fish need a mixture of food that includes not only flakes but also frozen and live foods

While freshwater aquarium fish don’t offer the beauty and appeal of the fish and invertebrates available to saltwater aquarium hobbyists, most tropical fish experts recommend that beginners start with a freshwater aquarium.

This is sound advice. But that doesn’t mean you have to take it. Sure, a marine aquarium setup is a bit more sensitive, but with the proper planning and a commitment to high water quality, you can be successful with your first saltwater aquarium.

Aquarium light fixtures range from a single plain fluorescent tube to combination metal halide and very high output VHO fluorescents with very high price tags. For your first tank you can get by with the simpler equipment. Here is an overview of the available lighting options for your aquarium.

Fish-Only Aquariums
An aquarium that is not going to house any live plants can be illuminated with a standard aquarium light fixture, usually housing a normal output fluorescent tube that enhances the natural beauty of the fish.

Low-Light Plant Aquarium
If you wish to have live plants but do not wish to spend too much for your aquarium lights and the electricity to run them, you can have an attractive aquarium with light as low as 2 watts per gallon. The light can be provided in most cases with dual-tube fluorescent fixtures, which are available to fit in the same space on the hood as the regular single-tube strip lights. Use the full-spectrum bulbs specifically designed for aquatic plant growth.

Reliable aquatic plants that will do well in this low-light setup include Java Moss, Java Fern, and several species of Anubias, which are richly green and share the Java Fern’s dislike of being planted in gravel. Such plants can be grown anywhere in the tank- on the bottom, on rocks, and up on driftwood.

Aquatic Gardens
For additional variety in the type of aquatic plant life more light is needed. There are several ways to achieve the necessary wattage. This enhanced lighting is more expensive to purchase and to operate. It is possible, however, to have a veritable garden in your fish tank with plants of all types, including flowering varieties and emerging plants, which can grow right up out of the water.

Brilliant and beautiful gardens can be created in uncovered tanks fo almost any depth over which metal halide fixtures are hung.

One of the most important aquarium accessories are aquarium stands . They are types of aquarium accessories . Aquarium stands are available in both wood and steel. There are dedicated aquarium stands available that will provide a solid base, although a small fish tank might sit on another item of furniture.

Wood stands with natural finishes are the most expensive choice for bow front aquarium cabinets. Stands may also be made of acrylic with various painted finishes in black, white, or ivory.

Wooden stands are presently the choice of most aquarium stand buyers because of the elegance and sophistication it exudes. However, finishing should not only be the basis in choosing wooden stands but on the kind of wood that will literally carry weight of your aquarium. Wooden crafted stands are available in a variety of styles.

Glass tanks are twice as heavy as acrylic tanks. An empty 20 gallon glass aquarium weighs over 25 lbs. Acrylic tanks are much lighter than glass tanks.

Wooden crafted stands are available in a variety of styles. Wooden crafted stands are available in a variety of styles. Wood byproducts like fiberboard or pressed board are the most commonly used wood substitutes. Although they are quite strong, they are prone to swelling and weakening if the middle layers are exposed to water.

Wood stands with natural finishes are the most expensive choice for bow front aquarium cabinets. Stands may also be made of acrylic with various painted finishes in black, white, or ivory .

Cabinet fronts are usually attached with staples to the side and the backs are quite flimsy. So even if you use a cabinet made entirely out of plywood, your tank will be really only supported by the sides of the cabinet.

Cabinet style aquarium stands are available using raw timber or can be ordered with a finish to match your home. Open type aquarium stands are the simplest type of stands and are made of lighter materials than wood. They can hold glass aquariums, up to 40 gallons.

The best support for an aquarium is a stand designed specifically for it. The worst stand for a larger fish tank is a a table, bookshelf, or any other piece of furniture that was probably never designed to hold the weight of a fish tank - which is at least 10 pounds for every gallon of tank capacity.

As you can see, larger tanks quickly represent some extremely heavy wights. A 20 gallon tank weighs up to 200 pounds, while a 55 gallon tank can weigh more than 500 pounds. fish tanks will fit on many surfaces, but many will not be able to handle the kind of weight a fish tank represents.

Commercial aquarium stands are designed to hold that much weight, to keep it level, an hold up under damp conditions. Aquarium stands are available in both metal and wood, with wood coming in a large variety of styles.

There are furniture quality cabinets that not only support the fish tank stylishly, but also provide storage space underneath for accessories and support equipment. You can also get matching wood canopies to serve as both tank cover and light fixture.

It is a good idea to buy the tank and stand together as a unit because the tank can come with a long-time warranty, but the warranty might be void if you don’t use the tank manufacturer’s matching aquarium stand. You can check with the dealer or manufacturer on this.

You’ll find standard rectangular query and was in sizes from 2 1/2 gallons to 220 gallons and more, plus an assortment of hexagonal, pentagonal, and other shapes in various sizes.

So which aquarium should you choose?

First of all get a glass tank. Acrylic tanks have a lot of advantages their lighter and more resistant to jarring and shocks but also have disadvantages such as higher cost an easier scratch ability. For your first fish tank a glass tank will save you much better if for no other reason than that it’s cheaper.
Of course, if you are to have access to an acrylic tank it will work fine for your first fish tank. You have to be very careful about scratching it however. Scratches can be buffed out of plastic and not out of glass or plastic is so much more susceptible to scratching the glass that you have managed to make frequent use of this advantage.

What shape?

You should choose a rectangular aquariums. In addition to being less expensive on a capacity for capacity basis, rectangular fish tanks also are the most efficient in shape, since they maximize service area. Service area is the most significant factor in determining the carrying capacity of an aquarium since it is at the surface and only at the surface that gas exchange-oxygen in, carbon dioxide out-occurs. The total volume of the water held by a tank is of less importance than that tanks surface area in determining its suitability for housing fish.

Let’s first consider the size and shape of the front viewing panel. Some tanks are very squat, low and wide they are called “breeder” tanks because they offer maximum service and bottom areas for a given volume and are of greater utility. Tall narrow tanks are called “show tanks” because they are aesthetically more pleasing.

You can breed fish in show tanks and many gorgeous ornamental aquariums are of breeder tank proportions, but the names reflect this general difference. Basically the more square-like the front viewing glass, the more ornamental the tank seems. On the other hand the more square-like the bottom panel glass, the more efficient and practical tank becomes.

There’s an interesting contradiction here. One thing that makes people ooh and ahh about an aquarium is beautiful aquatic plants. Less a planet tank is certainly more “showy” than a non-planet one. Show tanks, however, are less suitable for growing plants. The extra water depth means that you have to have high intensity lighting if you want healthy plants, and this lighting is relatively very expensive.

What size fish tank?

It may sound counterintuitive, but your chance of success is greater with a larger tank. The reason for this is simple: the larger the aquarium, the more the way you have in making mistakes. Remember that waste management is of primary concern. With a very large amount of water you have longer to catch problems and correct them before they become catastrophes.

There is also psychological factor. People naturally want a nice assortment of fish for aesthetic reasons, so there is a “mental minimum” in choosing the tank inhabitants. For many people, this minimum far exceeds the carrying capacity of the smaller tanks, the larger tank provide enough room for almost anyone’s idea of the basic assortment of tropical fish.

Larger tanks are superior in terms of temperature regulation. The science behind this intuitive answer is that service area and volume are not in a linear relationship: a body loses heat through its surface, but the amount of heat contains a function of its volume. Thus the thermal stability of a larger aquarium is many times greater than that of a small aquarium, and very small tanks are downright precarious with regard to temperature regulation.

A short power outage on a Winter’s night can chill a 10 gallon tank lethally while a modern 50 gallon tank in the same room might suffer only a tiny drop in temperature. Likewise, a stuck heater in the small tank will cook the fish rather quickly, but with a large tank you could have considerable time to notice the problem before it reached at the proportions.

When you couple this with the safety buffer of the larger size in terms of waste management, you realize that making a small aquarium requires a considerable knowledge and skills but that even a complete beginner has a good chance of succeeding with a large tank. How big is bigger than big enough? There is no set answer to that question, as there are so many factors involved.

An expert aquarist might keep a 5 gallon tank with three carries in a very successful for years, while newcomer might dump of a hundred fish into a 40 gallon tank and kill them all and shorter. Given that all other things are equal, I would set the minimum size of the tank that you should as a beginner obtain is 20 gallons, but larger would be better.

A very popular standard 55 gallon aquarium is not ideal for the from the fish’s point of view, being a tall show titanium, but it has a respectable volume, it looks really nice, and it is often available as a combo special, being on sale with tank and full hood for a very reasonable price. It is often available cheaper than a 40 gallon tank. Likewise a 10 gallon aquarium often costs less than a 5 gallon tank, but I do not recommend the very popular 10 gallon tank; it’s just not big enough.

The all- around choice for the best tank for beginner is one of the least popular sizes. In fact you’ll probably have to order one since very few stores stock in-it’s a gay stock size, but one for which there is not a great demand; it also might cost more than the more popular 55 gallon size that tank is the 50 gallon, sometimes called the 50 breeder.

It is 36 inches long, with the other two dimensions being 18 inches 18 inches wide and 18 inches tall. Can it be an ornamental tank? Well, I own one that has been in on and off use for going on for decades. The last five years it has been a focal point in my dining room, and one of my daughters, for who fish have no value other than decorative, considers that her second favorite of all my aquariums.

Bottom line is first the tank itself is typically not the major cost of setting up in acquiring, even for very large, very expensive tanks. Second, because the cost of a 10 gallon tank is so low to begin with, its resale value is practically nil, while larger tanks are often in demand. Last but not least, the cost of a 50 gallon tank low enough that it does not cost very much to get a good start in the fish in the fish keeping hobby. So do yourself a favor and buy a large tank.

Just as there are different types, there are different types of aquariums. the purpose for which a tank is being setup can affect the system as much as will the types of fish being included. some of the following setups are unlikely to be first tanks, but all of them could be.

Any division of aquarium types is going to be arbitrary to the extent that many people want to have tanks that serve several functions. the following list of fish tank types is meant to present the various options and functions as independently as possible the list can be mixed and matched.

1. Decorative Tanks
The most common fish tank, a decorative tank is an aquarium designed to be an ornamental addition to a home’s decor. Every aquarium can be setup to function as a decorative aquarium. Breeding and fry-raising tanks, however, tend to be less decorative in nature. A typical decorative tank is designed and organized to look decorative and beautiful in the home or office.

One person;s idea of beautiful me be another’s idea of hideous, but that is true in tastes in paintings, wallpaper, and many other things. What is most important in designing an ornamental aquarium is ensuring that the components selected please your sense of asthetics and also combine to produce a healthy aquatic environment.

2. Theme Tanks
A “theme” aquarium combines elements around a central idea. You can organize your tank around a color theme or a decorative theme. The possibilities for other types of themes are endless. Some effective tanks focus on a particular geographical region, and are called biotope tanks.

Besides colors, what other theme ideas cna you use to setup an aquarium? Another option is to focus on a particular type of fish. Or a tank in which all the fish are long or striped or catfish and more. A thematic community tans is the most popular, including the fish which appeal most to the fish tank’s owner.

3. Biotope Tanks
Many aquarium fish enthusiasts enjoy trying to recreate a very specific natural environment. This is known as a biotope aquarium. The tank can be organized simply as, for example, “plants and fish from Asia” or more specific as fish and plants from Sri Lanka. For a first tank, the easiest apporach is to be somewhat less specific.

4. Species Tanks
Fish can be kept as only a single species in a tank. This is especially true, and preferred, when the fish can be killed by or kill other fish. Many fish don’t necessarily have to be kept separate, but can be shown off better when kept by themselves. This is the case with schooling species, where the appearance behavior of the school are as fascinating and interesting as those of individual fish.

5. Instructional Tanks
Aquariums, sometimes with just a few goldfish are used for educational purposes in elementary classrooms, sometimes playing role in the curriculum. Fish tank setups in schools and marine aquariums are tailored to the students at different levels. High school science classes are enhanced when they include one or more aquariums for specific instructional purposes. At the university level, aquariums of various types are used in conjunction with studies in ecology, oceanography, genetics, and various other fields.

6. Breeding Tanks
Most tropical fish are bred on fish farms in Florida an Southeast Asia. Some are wild-caught. Breeding tanks are an important part of many aquarist’s setups. The term “breeding tank” is reserved for a tank established expressly for the purpose of propagating a particular species of fish. Many species of fish, however, will breed regularly in any tank. In the community setting, though, few if any of the fry will survive. A breeding tank is set up to maximize the chance of spawning and the chance of survival for the young fish.

7. Fry Rearing Tanks
Fry tanks are normally utilitarian in design, often containing only a filter, the fish, and water. High feeding rates and frequently required water changes facilitate a lack of substrate and decor, which could trap food and waste particles, These tanks don’t have to be so sparse. Fry will frow very well in planted tanks tanks - even planted community tanks, provided all the fish placed together are of similar sizes.

Many fish species can be purchases as very young juveniles at discounted prices. when only the fry are places into a tank, the spaciousness of the tank will contribute to rapid growth of the entire group.

8. Pet Tanks
It may be surprising, but many fish become tame pets that can interact with their keepers. It is not unusual for such fish to mope when the owner is away and they are cared for by someone else, or to show excitement when the owner returns.

Cichlids are the most popular pet type of fish, but many large catfish can be kept this way also. Goldfish, Koi, pacu and other large species can be kept as single pets in a big aquarium. Many of these fish school naturally, but as lone pets they will accept the human companion into their school.

Whatever type of fish tank you choose, you must select the proper fish to fit into your plan. There are several ideas for stocking themes to consider.

For many people the word reptile or the phrase cold-blooded sends chills down their spine. Others find reptiles to be as cuddly as a puppy and as cute as a kitten. No matter your preference there are unique homes and habitats for every creature on the Earth.

When setting up a special space for your pet you want them to feel comfortable. This is why so many reptile owners choose a terrarium as there pets pad. A terrarium is like an aquarium but designed for natural décor.

There are four layers to a terrarium. Bottom layer is for drainage consisting of pebbles, pea gravel or coarse sand. The next layer is often a thin layer of activated charcoal. This cleans the air of any plant decay fumes.

The third layer consists of sphagnum moss which prevents soil sift. Top layer is soil or sand depending on the resident’s preference. You can choose terrarium plants that are pet friendly along with a rock heater, filter, bedding, a mister and logs.

So you can have a mini rainforest with a tiny waterfall for your frogs or a sandy desert scene for your slithering snake. Take in consideration if your pet is nocturnal or a day crawler.

Also give them something for privacy such as a cave or log for hiding. Don’t forget items for your climbers. Your terrarium will be the envy of the reptile community. For more details on terrariums or reptile pet ides you can search online or visit your local library for a book or two.

A terrarium is a great way to build your favorite reptile a home away from home. You can create a miniature rainforest for your fire belly frogs or a desert oasis for your lizard.

A miniature pond and a lily pad are perfect for your turtle pal. No matter the creature and the scene you wish to set there is a terrarium ready for your building.

If you are interested in a terrarium you can learn more about these and the creatures that find comfort in them at your local library. There are books galore for everything from Iguana care to newts and monitor lizards.

You can also find more information online. There are several large shopping sites online that offer catalogs filled with pictures of available terrariums as well as terrarium decor. Decor items can include rocks, logs, grasses and sand. Other items in these catalogs can range from water dished, chlorinators, heat wave rocks and bait.

Setting up a saltwater aquarium does not take a lot of effort other than preparation. Choose your tank material, size and style. Choose system set up such as filtration, lighting and power. Choose your substrate nitrogen cycling process. Choose the fish species and learn how to care for each type.

Choose care items, reef, plant life etc. Learn about fish disease, care and treatment. Learn about water PH and temperatures needed. Once these areas are completed you can begin the true set up process. You will first want to clean your aquarium with freshwater and a sponge.

Apply your background or paint the exterior. Put your stand in place and level it. Then place aquarium on stands and level it. Prepare any additional steps as suggested by the kit instructions. Fill, use dechlorinator, and set up filtration system and so on.

Detailed instructions for a step-by-step process are located in aquarium kit or available online. You can also speak with a pet store representative for assistance. Some pet stores will offer the assistance of an experienced aquarium set up with the purchase of an aquarium.

Speak to your local store representative for details. Once your tank or aquarium is set up and functioning it is simply a matter of maintenance form then on out. Cleaning of your tank is important to keep fish fecal matter from causing illnesses or from clogging your filtration system.

The use of a blenny can help prevent excessive algae buildup, as this is the creatures diet. You will find that over time it’s simply a part of your routine and that joy surpasses work with your aquarium.

A well-planned and cared for saltwater aquarium is comparable to a work of art. The splashes of color from each tropical fish add a vibrant touch to any room. The tranquil bobbing of fish can soothe away a days worth of stress. Corals and plant life bring nature indoors for a breath of fresh air under water.

By searching online, visiting a local pet store or by reading books at your local library you can prepare yourself with the knowledge of tropical fish species, care and saltwater aquarium setup. You will want to of course know which area of your home you wish to place your aquarium and take measurements for proper fit. You can choose from lovely glass and wood aquariums and bases or durable Plexiglas models in a range of colors and shapes. The fish available are too many to mention all together.

Instead here are few that are popular amongst fish lovers. There are bicolor angelfish, blennies, butterfly fish, cardinal fish, clownfish, gobies and dotty backs. All are unique in their appearance, shape and size. It is best to do research in which fish commune best with which other species.

This prevents fighting and ultimately the loss of a fish life. Once you have prepared yourself with knowledge and you have purchased your materials and any tool you may need you can install and enjoy. All can enjoy the peace and beauty of your saltwater aquarium. Maintenance will be a breeze with proper knowledge and preparation. You will find that your aquarium is deeply satisfying for years and years to come.

Selecting a tropical fish aquarium may seem difficult, but in fact it can be a breeze by following some basic tips. Before you purchase a tank you should always know where you want to set up your tank and the measurements of the space. You are advised to be able to provide room for a tank between 20 to 30 gallons.

This is a good size for maintaining the balanced environment for your fish. This is also a great way to not be at a loss for money if you decide keeping fish is not for you. This is a much safer choice than choosing a huge deluxe aquarium. You will next want to choose between acrylic models or a glass model.

Acrylic is a bit pricier, but it does provide better insulation than glass. A glass tank however is easier to manage and does not scratch as easy as an acrylic tank. Once you choose your aquarium keep in mind how the tank will be supported. A 20-gallon tank that is full weighs 225 pounds. A television stand would not be able to support such a tank. A stand that is made specifically for holding an aquarium is advised.

You could build a stand and save yourself some money, as stands can be costly. Some other materials you will need include a filtration system, light, cleaning supplies, water conditioner, air pump, thermometer and gravel. These are the basic items needed to begin the set up process for your aquarium. If you are interested in learning more about aquariums you can find an abundance of information on the Internet and at your local library. You are sure to be inspired as to which tank is best for you.

Learning to care for freshwater fish and your aquarium is not complex. Simply learning about the type of fish you want to care for and how to properly is what you really need. You can teach yourself how to care for a specific type of fish by searching online or by reading a book on your specific type of fish.

Understanding what your fish require in their environment such as heat, light, etc as well as what their nutritional needs are will keep your fish healthy and thriving. Knowing this information will allow you to understand what supplies you need for your fish. First choose an aquarium that is between 20 to 30 gallons or more especially if you want to keep a large amount of fish. You will need to choose between acrylic or glass aquariums.

Glass lasts longer as it does not scratch as easily and it is less expensive if it must be replaced. Acrylic tanks are better insulated but can cost three to five times more than a glass tank. The supplies needed for your fish will include the tank, a light, filter, cleaning supplies, aquarium hood, air pump, heater, aerator, rocks, thermometer and gravel.

Also needed are plants either plastic or living and fish food to your list. Be sure to know what types of food are best for your fish’s health. Also make sure your tank is supported properly and that your tropical fish are in a healthy location in your home or office. The health of your fish should always be your number one priority. Simply following these easy steps will allow you to care properly for your freshwater fish and provide them a good life.

You have so many more options today for buying aquariums than ever before. There are four main areas to search for your aquarium. These four venues include a pet store, online, a major grocery chain or the newspaper. Each of these places offers aquariums and pet care supplies. A pet store is always a good place to purchase pets or their supplies.

Be sure that the pet store is clean and that the fish are cared for in clean tanks. If it is clean and hazard free than this is a good place to ask and view some aquarium choices. You never want to buy from a shady looking pet store even if prices are cheap. These locations often go through puppy mills or exotic black market trades and should not be supported.

Shopping online is easier and safer than ever. You can view color photos, dimension specifics and clear prices for aquariums and fish care supplies. The benefits of online shopping can include sales and additional information. You can often find lists of supplies, fish care information and more.

Most major grocery chains carry pet supplies and even pets such as fish and hamster. They are convenient and often offer a 3-day replacement guarantee for deceased fish. The downside is that these fish often do die and the problem of replacing these fish constantly makes it a big turn off. The newspaper will often offer used aquariums and supplies.

Always check these items out for defects or damages before you purchase them. The options are out there and you have a great opportunity to find an aquarium and to find it at an affordable price.

There are a number of areas where you can purchase an aquarium. You can shop online, a pet store or even find them for sale in the newspaper. A pet store is always a safe bet for purchasing fish supplies. They are dependable and sales associates can help answer pet questions and aid you in picking out supplies.

Shopping online is a helpful way to purchase an aquarium. There are color photos, aquarium dimensions and clear to read prices for aquariums and supplies make this method a breeze. A benefit of online shopping is the chance to come across a sale or discount as well as additional information that can be useful.

Supply lists, fish care information and more are available to you online. Your local newspaper will often offer used tropical fish aquariums and supplies. Always be sure to check these items out for defects or damages before you purchase them. You would be very disappointed to pay for something you will soon have to discard. Keep your eye out for sales at local pet stores or deal online.

Don’t be in a rush as you may miss an aquarium sale that you’d be sorry to miss. There are aquariums that are sold in several large grocery chains but these are often not of the highest quality. They are often damaged shortly after purchase leading you to make another purchase soon after. Take your time in finding the right location for your aquarium purchase. You will be satisfied in the end for the aquarium itself and the price you paid for it.

Having fish can be a great way to teach your kid’s responsibility or simply a peaceful addition to your home for personal enjoyment. Beginning with a 20 to 30 gallon for freshwater fish is advised. This is a helpful size to keep a good array of fish while being able to maintain a stable and healthy environment for your fish. There are some basic items that will be needed for your aquarium.

These items include a filtration system, light source, thermometer, cleaning supplies, air pump and gravel. The exact type of supplies you need vary depending on your fish. If your fish require a specific temperature you will need to add a heater to your list. Food and plants are also required. You can go with plastic plants or live plants.

Living plants require a specific wattage while plastic plants are fine with fluorescent lighting. You will need a water conditioner to remove chlorine as well. All of these items can be found easily. You have several ways to shop for them. You can shop online, a local pet store or even other local stores including major grocery chains offer fish and supplies. Your best bet is to study the fish you desire to have. Knowing what they eat and their nutritional needs is very important.

Also understanding the environment needs such as light and temperature is key as well. Once you know what your fish need you can prepare a list and go shopping. You can even ask a professional online through email or by a quick call to the pet shop for a list of the items you need. Remember that what your fish need for optimal health is really all that is required. Understanding this will help you to be on your way to setting up a healthy fish aquarium in your home or business.

Caring for freshwater fish is not complex instead it is simply a matter of learning about the type of fish you are interested in and how to properly do so. You can learn how to care for a specific type of fish by searching online or by either purchasing or checking out a book on your specific type of fish.

You have to understand what they require for their environment (heat, light, etc.) and what nutritional needs they have. This will allow you to understand what supplies you need for your fish. Choose an aquarium that is 20 to 30 gallons or more if you want a large amount of fish.

Acrylic or glass makes up an aquarium. Glass does not scratch as easily and it is less expensive. Acrylic tanks are better insulated and allow for more natural light transfer.

Basic aquarium supplies for your fish will include the tank, a light, filter, cleaning supplies, aquarium hood, air pump, heater, aerator, rocks, thermometer and gravel. You will also need to add plants (plastic or living) and food to your list.

Food types vary from pelts and flakes to gelatin. Be sure to know which is best for the health of your fish. Make sure your tank will be supported properly and that your fish are in a proper location in your home or office. Your fish’s health should always be your top priority. As long as you follow these steps you will be caring properly for your freshwater fish in no time.

Fish can be a peaceful addition to your home or office. The peaceful beauty of the fish can be soothing and relaxing. This is why so many doctors and dentist offices have fish tanks. It is suggested that for the best results to start with a 20 to 30 gallon for freshwater fish.
You can choose between plastic plants or live plants. Living plants require a specific wattage while plastic plants need only fluorescent lighting. You will require a water conditioner to remove chlorine for your fish’s health. These supplies can be found easily and you have several ways to shop for them including online, your local pet store or even a major grocery chains, which often offer fish and supplies.

Selecting the right aquarium for your home can be simple if you follow some basic tips. First thing is first, you should think about where you will set up the aquarium in your home then measure the space before selecting an freshwater of saltwater aquarium. Mini tanks are becoming popular but they are hard to maintain a balanced environment and fish often die due to this.

It is suggested to but a 20 to 30 gallon fish tank. It is not as expensive as the deluxe models and if you find that caring for fish is not for you, you will not be out a ton of money.

You will also want to choose between and acrylic or a glass model. Acrylic is more expensive, but it does allow for more natural light flow. A glass tank is easier to manage and does not scratch as easy. Once you find your tropical fish tank consider how it will be supported.

A 20-gallon tank filled weighs 225 pounds. A bookshelf would not be able to support this tank. A stand that is made specifically for holding an aquarium is best.

The other materials you will need include a filtration system, light, cleaning supplies, water conditioner, air pump, thermometer and gravel. These are the basic items needed to set up your aquarium. You can find other tips for selecting an aquarium online or through a fish care book that you can come across at your local library.

No matter how big or small or the material your fish tank is made of, you are sure to find the perfect aquarium for you and your family.

You enjoy the bright, festive colors of the tropics, and want to be able to emulate that in a home aquarium. This means you’ll have to find the right freshwater tropical fish for your tank. There are several varieties for you to choose from, so you’ll want to know a little information about each in order to make the best decision.

Some of the most common fish that you’ll find in tropical fish aquariums are betta fish, or Chinese fighting fish. People use these fish for decoration, or to spruce up a room in their home, since the fish are bright in color, and have reddish, purple, and orange hues, and have elaborate tails and fins–especially the males.

However, betta fish are very aggressive and combative, and should be kept in small aquariums by themselves for the most part. The female betta fish with smaller fins can be housed together for short periods of time, so a small bowl with one beta fish per room is probably best.

The angel fish is another tropical fish that will add lots of color and variety to your tropical fish tank. Types such as the white blushing angel have a splash of color on the gills, giving the fish the appearance of blush on the cheeks.

These fish look great when paired in a tank with fish that are brightly colored, and the tank must be slightly acidic in order for them to thrive. The silver zebra angel can most likely live peacefully in the tank with the blushing angel, and you may also want to include the Black Veil Angel, which has a striking midnight blue hue.

If are looking for a fish that is bold in color all over, you may want to check out the cichild species of fish. Many of these fish are bred in Africa, and these tropical aquarium fish can thrive healthily in most freshwater tanks without a problem. The Cobalt Blue Zebra Cichild is a beautiful fish with zebra-like stripes over a blue body.

The fish eat mostly plant-based foods, and can survive in room temperature water, but can be aggressive. The Electric Yellow Cichlid is the most peaceful of the species, but can still be slightly combative. The bold yellow color of the fish is sure to make it a hit with kids, and the fish tank should include accessories such as caves, rock, and sand.

If you’re still not sure which freshwater tropical fish are best, you can always look at www.fishchannel.com to get detailed descriptions on each of the fish you’re considering–including pictures, the scientific name of the fish, the fish’s diet, and the best fish to pair in the tank with your favorite species. You can also contact a fishkeeper or local breeder to find fish that are exotic and suitable for a home aquarium. Good Luck!

First of all, you’ll want to get a real history of fish keeping, so that you will know the best ways to tend to the species of fish you are interested in caring for. Fish keeping is believed to have begun thousands of years ago in Asian countries such as Japan and China, as well as several sections of Europe. Pools of carp were kept in ponds of the wealthy in Europe, mainly to be used as a meat substitute during religious holidays when meat was not allowed.

Asian fish keeping focused more on keeping the fish as pets than food. The tropical fish hobbyist was able to raise domesticated forms of the koi and goldfish in Asia, and you can still see varieties of these fish in man-made fountains and ponds at Chinese restaurants in your area. These tropical fish are especially enjoyable to look at, since they are usually very bright in color and have a peaceful temperament.

If you think you may want to be a tropical fish hobbyist for a living, you should also know how this hobby will work for you once you turn it into a business. Fish keeping is a booming business all over the world, and is a multi-billion dollar industry. The United States is actually the largest world market for this industry, since there have been almost 10 fish per household across the country in recent years.

As a tropical fish hobbyist, you should also know the technical sides of caring for the fish you’ve chosen. For instance, maintaining a clean and safe aquarium for your fish is important.
The water must be kept at a certain temperature for tropical fish–which is usually very cold–and other factors must be taken into consideration when setting up the tank, such as the water conditions.

The water must be virtually bacteria free, and some tropical fish will need water with more sodium, or sand at the bottom of the tank in order to simulate the ocean. If you want to find out how you can be a tropical fish hobbyist in your area, you can always ask your local pet store for details on fish breeders and hobbyists in your area.

Aquarium care requires you to take care of the aquarium plants and other tank accessories. You need to pay daily attention to your aquarium and your pet fish. It is important to ensure proper and timely cleaning of the aquarium, to maintain the temperature of the water and the lightning schemes and placing of other accessories.

Before putting in water into the fish tank it is important to condition the water to ensure quality. Presence of chlorine and an excess of dissolved gases in the water can have a really bad impact of the health of the fishes.

You can condition water by making it stand for a week or two before putting in the fish. This process of conditioning helps facilitating an exchange of gas between the water and air, also helps the fine particles to settle out, makes life impossible for the fish parasites to thrive and also gives the bacteria in the water adequate time to strike as balance.

You can also avail yourself of certain chemicals to get rid of the chlorine and chloramines from the water. There is nothing to be alarmed about if the water turns cloudy after few days. This is an absolute natural phenomenon caused due to the presence of the bacteria and is sure to clear itself within a week.

You can also opt for nitrogen fixing bacterial cultures which will help you in achieving a balanced aquarium. Temperature control is another important aspect of aquarium care. For fresh water aquarium the most desirable temperature range is from 243 to 26 Celsius.

If the temperature of the water increases the bacterial count is also liable to increase and the dissolved oxygen level falls. Maintaining uniform temperature is important for the health of the fish. Sudden fluctuations can cause tremendous shocks to the fish and it can also contract some kind of disease.

Check if your aquarium heater has an outside adjustment for controlling temperature. Weigh all the pros and cons and figure out all the requirements and then only settle for a heater for your aquarium.

Every kind of tank requires thermometers. They are either fixed or are floating inside the tank. Color change sin the thermometer indicates changes in temperature. The next most important aspect of aquarium care is effective lightning. Be a natural or an artificial, light is primary for the successful maintenance of an aquarium.

It is adequate to have about 12 hours of light per day. You pet fish would need light to see, to feed and to reproduce. It also helps in bringing out the true beauty of the fish for it has a definite effect on its color.

Dim lighting is mostly adequate for the fish but the plants also require enough lighting. Artificial lights also help in controlling the growth of plankton and algae. Whichever way it is, make sure to take good care of your aquarium, and you’ll see your pet fish happy and healthy.

The most important thing that counts in fish care is keeping the fish tank clean and clear. If it is not cleaned on a regular basis it can be the thriving ground of a many bacteria and can be dangerous for your fish. However never change all the water at once.

Fish get easily get used to the conditions of the water they live in. if all the water is changed at once then might get the shock of an extra clean environment which can be really fatal. Too much of cleaning can remove the good bacteria that are needed to break down the waste and toxins like ammonia into harmless nitrates.

While changing the water weekly it is essential to keep in mind that only one third of the whole water should be removed. Otherwise the water chemistry might drastically get altered and cause harm to the fish.

While cleaning the fish tank no sort of soap or detergent should be used. The amount of water removed should be replaced with dechlorinated water of the same temperature as the water in the tank. It is also a good idea to vacuum the gravel about once a week to remove food and other debris from the bed of the tank.

When planning to have several fish in one tank, you need to take care of the fact that the tank is not over crowded. Add fish in your tank at the rate of one to two fish every one or two weeks.

One thing that you need to find out at the very outset is about the compatibility of the different species of fish that you intend to keep together. Fish should be grouped according to their preference for the same water temperature, water type and acidic level of the water.

Keep a good watch on each and every fish in your aquarium . Look out for signs of sickness like cloudy eyes and slimy looking bodies. If one fish is identified to be having some kind of a disease make fast moves to save the other fish from contracting the same.

It is also important to place the aquarium in a suitable place to prevent any kind of temperature fluctuations. It is also an important part of fish care regime to maintain the water quality.

It is required to regularly test the ammonia, nitrate and pH levels of the water. It is also a good idea to keep a canopy or a hood over the tank at all times.

Another very important aspect of fish care is not letting your fish get stressed. If the level of stress in your fish increases then its ability to heal also falls. The main causes of stress in fish are unsuitable water, lack of physical space, wrong mixing of species, oxygen deficiency, poor nutrition, and sudden changes.

The common signs that tell you your fish may be suffering from stress are lack of appetite, staying hidden for a long span of time or even wounds that don’t seem to heal. However proper and correct fish care will help you in giving your fish a better and healthy life.

Tropical fish come in a variety of shapes and sizes and give your aquarium a great look. They are mainly kept for the home aquaria and can add a lot of brightness and color to your home.

There are varieties of tropical fish to choose from. You can opt for the wild-caught specimens, single species and also hybrids. There are also specially bred tropical fish for some physical features like long fins and different patterns and also colorations.

The freshwater aquaria are also less expensive and easy to maintain. As such these are the most popular. The tropical fish are used to living in warm water and as such if you have an aquarium with heating then filling it with tropical fish would be the best choice for you.

An aquarium
with tropical fish can be real feature of your home. Fish keeping can be a very rewarding hobby and a good thing to do in your leisure time. It is a sheer treat for the eyes to watch these tropical fish. Just sitting and watching the tropical fish swim in its own rhythm is a very relaxing activity.

It is anytime a daunting task to set up and maintain a freshwater tropical fish aquarium. You need to have prior information on things like which fish to buy and which are the ones that live well together.

Collect all kinds of possible information on the popular types of tropical fish, details of the most common tropical fish diseases, the ways to recognize the symptoms, and what you require to do if your fish happens to contract them.

If you are an aquarium beginner then before venturing into fish keeping doing a proper research will only help prevent you from doing short sighted things. Say for instance putting a pacu fish in a 10 gallon aquarium, or say goldfish into a small bowl, or may be putting small fish together with more larger and aggressive species.

There are a few things that, if kept in mind help you in successful set up of a freshwater tropical fish aquarium. You need to first realize the responsibility involved, and then decide on the aquarium size and its location.

Once you have decided on these you can start buying your aquarium and the equipments. Set up your aquarium and put in all the wash gravel, plants, decorations and water.

For freshwater tropical fish aquarium it is essential for you to install a heater in the aquarium. Place your hood and the tank light on the aquarium. Be cautious about the power cords and maintain safety. Then wait for an adequate amount of time and put in the fish. Start with the harder varieties and make sure to add one or two at a time.

So get started with your fish keeping and make sure to spend some time regularly to maintain your aquarium. Cleaning your tank and changing the water regularly is important to reduce the nitrate levels in the aquarium and keep your tropical fish healthy and happy.

A heater becomes essential when you choose to put in tropical fish into your fish tank. These kinds of tropical fish live in warm water and cannot adapt themselves in water that has big temperature fluctuations.

It also important to get the right sized heater for the tank you have. However if you want to do away with the cost of installing a heater, you can put in gold fish in your tank as they can survive in un-heated water.

Lights help the fish to thrive and survive. It is more so in the case of salt water tanks. Correct lighting adds to the beauty of the tank by bringing out the colors of the fish and also the other accessories in the right way.

When these basics are done you need to choose for yourself the right kind of fish tank accessories to decorate it. It’s all a matter of personal choice, but remember that how you “do up” your fish tank can also have impact on the fish.

If you own a community tank with fish of different sizes it is always best to put up accessories that provide hiding areas for the smaller fish variety. With a bit of planning you can actually set up an environment that provides a natural habitat for your fishes.

The fish tank accessories that you need to keep handy are the fishing nets, plastic buckets, light timer, surge protector and glass cleaners. Use aquarium plants and rainbow aquarium gravels to brighten up and color up your fish tank.

It is all up to you what you want your aquarium to look like. However while finding the right kinds of fish tank accessories, keep in mind that a natural look enhances the life of the fish as they would feel like being in their natural habitat.

There are a great variety of quality fish foods in the market that you can choose from. It is essential to understand the dietary needs of your pet fish. You also need to get for yourself fish feeders suitable for your type of fish tanks. You can have automatic as well as manual fish feeders. These are absolutely hassle free and with minimal waste of fish feeding.

It is essential to understand the appetite of your fish and preference for fish food. Overfeeding can lead to serious health problems in your fish. You’re required to feed your fish only as much as they can eat in about three minutes.

After that you can continue to feed that amount one or two times per day. Fish tends to have a hungry look all day through but if you go by that and keep feeding it, much of the food will fall to the bottom of the tank. Afterwards this food gets decomposed and can lead to potential problems with water cleanliness.

Keep adding variety to your fish food. The fish get bored with the same food to eat day in and day out. Just as you would add spices and veggies and meat to your diet, you add some live worms and also some frozen and dried foods to fish’s diet. But be careful and don’t over do it and see to it that your fish don’t get fat. An excess of protein-rich diet with a lot of bloodworms can make your fish really fat.

Fish food if kept open, can get damp and have less nutritional value. A fish diet should have the adequate amounts of fat for energy and amino acids. Fish food must be such that it is readily digested to prevent build up of intestinal gas, renal failure and other types of infections. Aquatic diets especially for the carnivores should have vegetable matter like spirulina.

Keeping in check the ingredients of the fish food also helps in keeping away Aquarium pollution due to excessive ammonia. It is also essential to have carbohydrates in your fish food. It helps in tissue building.

There are mainly two kinds of fish food, prepared foods and live foods. Dry foods or flake foods are artificially manufactured fish food that is ideal for a lot of tropical and salt water fish. Flake foods can be preserved for a longer time as it has a longer shelf life. since these are baked, the moisture is removed and hence have better quality.

There are other types of prepared food like vacation foods, medicated fish food, freeze-dried frozen food. Vacation foods are designed to be placed inside the aquarium so that in the absence of the Aquarium owner the fishes don’t have to starve.

These are really good for the tropical fish. Medicated fish food is the most safe and effective way of delivering medication to fish. Whatever it be before buying your fish food don’t forget to make a detailed study of the kinds of fish food available in the market and which would suit your fish the most.
