Fish Aquariums and Aquarium Accessories
Having an aquarium in your home can be fun and interesting, but it requires planning to make sure the fish stay healthy and the aquarium remains in good working order.
Some fish, especially tropical fish, require specific temperatures, food and specialized fish care. Other fish, such as goldfish, can get by with only a small bowl, basic fish food and occasional cleaning.
Be sure to research the needs of the type of fish you want for your aquarium. Once you have done that, you can buy the necessary equipment. The tank is the first item to consider.
Generally you want one with enough room for the fish and a top so the fish can’t jump out. Unless you only have a small tank with a fish or two, a filter is critical.
Depending on the type of fish, you may need to purchase a heater to keep the water at the correct temperature. You will also want to purchase some gravel and perhaps a decoration or two, depending on how you want to decorate your aquarium. Plants can also add color to your tank and can help keep the water healthy for the fish.
Lastly, you will need to prepare the water for the tropical fish. Tap water usually contains chlorine, which can be extremely harmful to the fish. Chemicals that can remove the chlorine from the water can be purchased at the pet store and should be used in all cases.
Once you have removed the chlorine from the water, let the water sit for a few hours so the temperature equals the room temperature. This prevents the fish from being stressed by the change in water temperature. When all this is complete, put the fish in your aquarium and you have a fish tank!
